Drawing industrial pipeworks in photoshop

 by killerjackalope
This instructable covers quite a few techniques including rust, simple outlinings making curved right angles, sparks, lights and how to do aged metal work in different ways, also I'll do all the shortcuts in to it for as many version as I know (most are the same from 7.0 up to CS2 9.0)

For this instructable I'll be running CS2 9.0, the versions aren't very Important because this is all based on standard features.

Step 1: Fire her up there big chief...

photshop instructable step 1.bmp
well there's no real materials needed just an hour or so depending on how much detail you like to have... oh and a computer and photshop (but that's kind of self explanatory)

Fire up photoshop there, and sitck on some good music in the background whiile you're at it. (If i can run it so can you, 512 ram at the moment and an 8 gig page file set aside between some drives... (by the way under serious ram use a flash drive will melt it's plaastic casing... hence my metal design...

Open a document as big as possible, not going over board but 2500x2000 is what I happened to use I suppose 1500x1500 would do, getting serious detail involve getting a big canvas, even if you downscal it later it's best to start off big...

Hmm I still don't have a copy of it so I'm not sure, have you made the shape as a freeform path, also you have to have a raster layer selected, if it wont go in the pen tool try using one of the path selection tools.

When you start doing one thing, the techniques carry over alot... so you could do something else with it too.

Nice job jackalope-man! It looks cool, kind of easy to do too. I would like to do this in real life, now that would be even cooler... nice job.

It's nice and easy but figuring it out was harder like all the ways to make textures with brushes are easy to but take mild thinking to say 'aha that would look like rust' thanks miko making them in real life would be amazing... some day... *wanders off in to steel yard in the dead of night

I might try just drawing this on normal paper, just 1 pencil, no colored pencils, nothing, it's going to look great... I'll try, if I do, I'll scan a picture and post it here.

P.S. My name is Michael. ;-)

I know habit of shorten ing a nickname though... If I can find my piece on an ancient Tuba you could see where I got the ideas for this, at least 7hours work and I can't find the sketchpad it's in, and that upsets and worries me, probably the only bit of my own art I like...
