Insert the hook end of the dowel into the disk sandwich. The disks can be moved to between 2 to 4 inches away from the hook depending on how you like to spin. If you are just starting out, I'd suggest about 3 inches away from the hook. The technical name for having the disks at the top is a top-whorl spindle.
