Duck Tape Nintendo DS (Phat) and games holder

 by reclusivemonkey
A Nintendo DS (Phat) holder made out of Duck Tape. It also holds four games! I was inspired by seeing many other Duck Tape inventions on the internet and being too mean to fork out for a DS holder.

For this instructable, you will need;

One roll of Duck Tape
Sharp craft knife
Metal ruler
Scissors
Cutting surface
Nintendo DS Phat
Some DS games (4 or 8)
Some time

Go easy on me guys and gals, this is my first instructable!

To make the main part of the holder, you will need to stick two pieces of "duck fabric" together. We make this by sticking pieces of duck tape together, overlapping by about a centimeter. You can do this sticky side up, but I find it far easier to stick it down to my cutting surface. A clean cutting board you can get from most art/stationery shops is good for this. Mine came with a couple of sharp cutting knives as well.

Cut off several pieces of duck tape and stick them to your cutting board, so that you have a square that is 31cm x 22cm. Then cut back two strips from the top, 3cm x 11cm as shown in the diagram. Once you have done this, carefully peel the whole thing off you cutting board, and set it aside.

Repeat the same procedure, only this time you need a square 37cm x 22cm. At one end, trim the corners 3cm in from the corner point on the top and side, and on the other end, 6cm in from the top and side of the corner, as shown in the second diagram. Again, carefully peel the whole thing off the cutting board.

Now comes the tricky part. You need to align these two pieces, sticky sides facing and stick them together smoothly. The widest parts of both pieces should align; the narrowest end of the first piece should dissect the longer trimmed corner pieces as shown in the third diagram. Be very careful here; once duck tape meets duck tape sticky side, nothing will part it!!! This is the most crucial stage.

With your knife, make a cut along the sticky part of the second fabric, 11cm down from where the corners meet, so that you can fold it over the first piece. Fold over the left and right ends and smooth down. If you make a better job than me, it will look nice and neat!

can you make one with the ds lite?
reclusivemonkey (author) in reply to jgarcia-4Sep 9, 2011. 2:38 AM
Sorry I don't have a DS Lite or the time any more. You should be able to use this method with a DS Lite, just use different measurements.

Yeah,
someone else who actually uses the old ds
ahmad2117 says: Jun 22, 2011. 12:03 AM

Hi, great instructable. You might want to add a little magnet to the flap (will probably fit nicely between the card holders and a small piece of metal (make sure it sticks to the magnet!) to the Gameboy side of the casing. If this is done while making the cover, it will be quite sturdy and will close your case nicely! I don't own a gameboy (and probably never will) but it sure is a nice case! Good job, hope you get something good out of my advice!
caityjay in reply to noesSep 13, 2009. 12:28 PM
I personally don't trust magnets near my electronics- I don't know enough about what will or won't hurt them to take the risk! But I was envisioning a nifty duct tape buckle. Would look cool, and help it stay closed! Must get pretty colored duct tape.... :D SWEET 'ible, by the way; very well done!

I've had magnets near my DS before (accidentally) and all it seems to do is make it think it's closed...no promises though. I doubt a small magnet would/could hurt anything.

just save youself the danger and use adheseve velcro!

Way cool, I love Duct tape. Noes tip on a little magnet is a great idea. Gonna try and get some multicoloured tape and go duct tape crazy later.

great instructable!!! I modified it really good. i will post it on how to make it soon
cddsuperstar says: Mar 6, 2009. 4:43 AM
You can also just place the 2nd layer of duct tape over the 1st, which eliminates having to risk putting it down wrong.

Woah, very cool. It's nice to see something new made out of Duck Tape besides wallets! :-) Do you happen to have an iPod? I have free instructions on how to make an iPod case on my site. Check it out! http://www.totallytape.com

cr7kid says: Nov 3, 2008. 3:40 AM
dude can i do it with painters tape or magic tape
reclusivemonkey (author) in reply to cr7kidNov 3, 2008. 10:21 AM
Hmm, I'm not sure of the properties of those tapes. I am guessing painters is stiff; this won't work. If magic tape is a cloth based tape, then it will work, as will any cloth based tape.

I want to thank you for this awesome idea! A friend of mine, known as Cheap Jay, has been duct taping his first wallet for going on 10 years. His children have a birthday coming up and I am going to make them a duct tape DS holder. I will be a goddess his their eyes with such a cheap and functional gift! YAY!

That's great Shirley, you shame Cheap Jay! =]
akaski says: Jul 8, 2008. 11:34 AM
That is awesome, but I don't have a measuring cutting sheet like you, and there seems to be so many measurements...... and I'm lazy, so I'll just stick to my current one for now :)
spacegirl94 says: Jul 8, 2008. 7:10 AM
this is awsome! i made one, it was easy. the game cartrige holders were not as neat as in the pictures, but that was my fault. Awsome instructable!

Glad you liked it spacegirl =]

Very nice. One thing though, it's Duct Tape, not Duck Tape.
Although I think there is a Duck Tape brand Duct Tape.
I searched Google a bit to make sure I was right and found an interesting article you may be interested in:

Thanks for the comments guys. Jake, my tape is most certainly "Duck Tape"! Maybe its a US/UK thing. I read the link you posted some time ago to resolve an argument at work :-)
