Introduction: Duct Tape Wallet With Double Sided Window
This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a duct tape wallet. If you have done your research you might be thinking "oh another one?" however this is different than others. As you can see in the photo the one that I have created has a double sided window (from what I have seen this is the first tutorial that accomplishes this). I will be making a Texas Longhorns wallet, my friend has wanted one for a few years now and I had some spare time on my hands. The wallet with the flames is my personal wallet.
Step 1: Materials
You will need:
-Duct tape (whatever color(s) you desire
-Black duct tape (for the inside of the window's)
-Exacto knife/Box cutter
-Cutting board (so you don't cut up any tables or desks)
-Carpenter's square (preferred, but not needed)
-Pen/Sharpie
-Packing Tape (clear tape)
Once you have gathered all the materials, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: The Main Pocket
This is where you can store money, receipts, coupons or other paper items.
1. Take a strip of duct tape that is 9" long and lay it sticky side up. Then take another strip of duct tape (a little longer than the previous one) and stick it half way up the strip of tape (lengthwise)
2. Flip and tear off a strip of duct tape (a little longer than the previous one) and stick it to the showing sticky side
3. Repeat this step until you have a sheet that is 6" tall (about 7 pieces of duct tape)
4. Fold over the edges so that there is no sticky sides showing
5. Find the shortest strip of tape and line up the carpenter's square with the edge of the tape
6. Hold the carpenter's square flat on the cutting board and place your hand so that it stretches across both sides of the carpenter's square (keep finger's away from cutting edge!)
7. Press down firmly and cut downwards with the knife (not too fast as to not to cut yourself)
8. Make sure the corners are are all 90 degree angles
9. Fold this part in half (this will be where the money is stored)
10. Repeat steps 1-3 but only use 5 strips of duct tape
11. Fold the sheet of duct tape that was made from 7 strips of duct tape in half
12. Slide the strip made from 5 strips of tape into the middle of the folded piece
13. Mark the places where the cut will be made
14. Use the carpenter's square to make the corners correct.
15. Put the middle strip (divider) in the middle of the folded piece
16. Take a strip of tape the length of the divider and rip in half (lengthwise)
17. Use on half to tape the divider right in the middle of the pocket.
18. Repeat on the other side
19. Take a strip of duct tape (a little longer than it is tall) and place it on the edges
20. Do this on both sides
21. Take your knife and slit the tape that was taped height wise where the pocket's open
22. Repeat on the other side
23. Fold the main pocket in half
When you have finished this move on to the next step.
Step 3: The 'T' Window
This is where you can put ID's, Driver licence's, ect...
1. Take four strips of duct tape, the length of half of the wallet
2. Put two together and set aside (this is 'double sheet')
3. Repeat step 2
4. Take four strips of black duct tape 3 3/4" long
5. Make a 'mini-sheet' (this is for the back of the id holder)
6. Take one of the 'double' strips and place on one side of the 'min-sheet'
7. Repeat step 6 (MAKE SURE THAT THE STICKY SIDES DO NOT TOUCH!)
8. Fold the main pocket in half
9. Put the mini-sheet of black duct tape directly in the fold and centered (top to bottom)
10. Smooth out the 'double's' on either side of the black mini-sheet to the main pocket
11. Create another mini-sheet of duct tape (this time with the tape you want for the window border) that is 2 3/4"X3 6/8" (three strips that are 4" long stuck sticky side to sticky side [like the base for the main pocket])
12. Cut the ends off and square the corners
13. Take piece that you just made and place the corner of it on the inside corner of the carpenter's square
14. On the longer side, make a small line at the 3/8" mark (from the corner of the square) (use the picture with the lines on the duct tape in black sharpie to guide you)
15. Use the edge of the carpenter's square to draw a line going lengthwise (use the picture with the lines on the duct tape in black sharpie to guide you)
16. On the shorter side make a mark at the 1/2" line (from the corner of the square) (use the picture with the lines on the duct tape in black sharpie to guide you)
17. Repeat step 15
18. Turn the piece 180 degrees and repeat steps 13-17
19. Take your knife and cut ONLY the inside square that was made from the lines crossing
20. Remove the piece that was cut out
21. Take a long piece of packing tape (about 6") and lay across the window (only hold the tape at the edges.
22. Flip the piece over and repeat step 21
23. Smooth the tape that is inside the window by pressing down on it (or moving your finger across)
24. Cut off the excess ends
25. Repeat steps 11-24
26. Line up one end of both the windows with the black piece of duct tape attached to the main pocket
27. Tear off a piece of duct tape that is a little longer that the window is tall
28. Rip this strip in half
29. Take this piece of tape and apply where the clear starts on the window
30. Line up the edge of the window with the black piece
31. Line up the edge of the window that does not have the half strip on the other side of the black piece
32. Fold the half strip across to the other side
33. Repeat step 27-32 but do it for the bottom of the window
34. Repeat step 33 but do it for the top (ONLY TAPE ONE WINDOW DOWN)
35. Leave one of the window's able to open from the top
36. Tape down the other edge of the window that can be opened from the top
37. Tape down the edge of the window that opens from the side
38. Cut the edge that was sealed up (this is for the look of the wallet)
When this is done proceed to the next step.
Step 4: Pockets
This is where you can hold cards (Gamestop cards, debit cards, business cards)
1. Make a mini-sheet of duct tape from 7 strips of duct that is half the length of the wallet
2. Trim up the edges using the carpenter’s square (this is the pocket base)
3. Take three strips of duct tape that is the same size as the mini-sheet that was just made (this is the pocket flap)
4. Repeat step 2 (use the one you already made as a guide)
5. Repeat step 3 five more times (use the one you already made as a guide)
6. Take one of the pocket bases and put it on the wallet
7. Take three of the flaps and set aside
8. Take one flap and line it up with the bottom of the pocket base
9. Take a strip of duct tape that is the length of the pocket base and tape the flap and bring the piece of tape around to the back of the main pocket
10. Flip open the first flap and take a piece of duct tape that is the length of the pocket base and rip it in half
11. Tape this half strip on the back of the flap
12. Repeat step 8-11 but evenly space the other two flaps
13. Take a piece of tape that is the height of the pocket base
14. Tape the edges down (on the side that is not next to the window bring around to the back, on the side that is on the window, rip it in half and then place on the edge)
15. Take your knife and cut the edges of the flap that are taped down (if you have trouble or questions look at the pictures)
16. Take your knife and run along the edge that is next to the window (look at the pictures if you have trouble)
Repeat steps 6-16 for the other side
Step 5: Touch-up's
This step is optional, but it makes the wallet look better.
