good hack I would never suspect that a lamp designed to take a 20 watt bulb would accept a 55 watt one, but your burn in procedure seems sound.

You might want to clean the bulb with rubbing alcohol before inserting it. don't touch the glass after you clean it off ie: put some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel, wipe the bulb off, then wrap the bulb in the paper towel and insert it, once inserted, remove the paper towel and let it dry for a few minutes before turning the lamp on. this will help to remove skin oil deposits on the lamp and can increase run time and help prevent lamp breakages. I know this works with Theatrical lamps, but I figured this may be the same, esp. if the bulbs are made of quartz. with professional theatrical lighting instruments, the lamps (bulbs) are made of quartz. they are high-temperature, high pressure lamps, and you do not want to touch them with your fingers, the oil on your fingers can change the refractivity of the quartz, which can create a hot spot and blow the lamp.
