How to build a Daft Punk Table Replica

The idea is to build a replica of the Daft Punk Table sold at Habitat, very nice, but, as long as I know not sold anymore.
The building process is not very complicated, the hardest part is to decide everything when your starting point is zero. I could get some ideas about the construction of the table like the use of "carton pluma" from Mathieu, a french guy that made one before I made mine. Ok! As many people has written me after watching the youtube videos, interested in the construction of the table, i'll write a quick'n'dirty guide excuse my English, but I'll write this very fast and English is not my native language.

So let's begin constructing the daft punk table replica. The materials i used for the table where MDF and 10mm grey. They produce an overall impression very similar to the original one, if not better. Under the glass there is a red plexiglass square and the 5x5 division are made of "carton pluma".

Its a good idea to put a sheet of difuser like thick onion paper on top of these squares so the light of the leds difusses through the red plexiglass.

What about using an LEDWiz to control it? I think that'd make this pretty easy, and just use the "LEDBlinky Animation Editor" to control its animations. You could also use the "Luminaudio™ Engine" software for the LEDWiz to make it beat to the music. I know that kinda takes part of the "homebuilt" aspect out of this project, but it'd get it running until you can make your own controller.

is it possible to detect the beats of the music with a microphone or something like that, or just connect a jack to the computer or whatever is playing music? My friend has a flashlight with LEDs that when you clap or make a noise, it turns on, you clap again and it becomes brighter and brighter, etc... so i was thinking of using something like that since I don't want the table always connected to the computer every time :\

Yes, you could make a circuit like some kind of sound activated light, maybe with a low-pass filter to filter everything but the rythmic section od the song and send a signal to the controller board in order to change the sequence at that time.

Hi folks, I need your help here I have an original daft punk table and the RTA switch (pictured) has burnt out. does anyone know the correct indexing and switch function I need to order a new part? Any help would be appricated as Habitat no longer deal with the supplier and I need to fix this myself. I have also attached the pdf for the company who supplies the RTA switch. I finally finished building this and the one problem I am having is the brightness of LED's. I am using 6 LED's in parallel. They are 12000mcd. When I tested them with a 9V battery they are super bright, but because I am scanning the matrix with the PIC and bcs of PWM, they become dimmer. I would really like them to be brighter. Did you use any reflective coating on the inside barriers to spread the light better? I am currently trying aluminum foil

aluminum foil won't help, and actually may hinder the propagation. best bet is mylar, and white (titanium white) paint is a good choice too. i know it's counterintuitive... get a light meter and check it out! peace.

Hi, No, I didnt, but that maybe help, the inside of my cells is just white paint (not very shiny finished), and one fold of diffuser thick paper (called "onion paper" in spain) just bellow the plexiglass...

What is "Carton Pluma" in English? Cardboard box? And are these LED lights, the kind with pins, or the "bullet" type with a brass metal base that holds the resistor? Sorry, I don't understand electrical stuff, much less the programming. Anyone?

It's corefoam, you can buy it at Pearl or any art store.

I made a similar table a few years ago. but not with the reactive lights. mine had boring lights that were basically individual flashlights hooked up with a centralised control pad/switch board powered by a AC adapter. I had no money so I went mega cheap and used 16 milk crates. bolted them together. plywood around the outside. Found a sheet of shop window glass - i.e. thick - which I cut to shape with a diamond angle grinder disc (really rough cut - use safety goggles and really really clean up after) then with black PVC tubing cut and glued around the edge of the glass. - otherwise it would have been a vein opening experience within minutes. painted the underside of the glass with "stain" paint for color cost me $12. No where as elegant as this puppy. your table is very very very cool. very very very professional. my hat goes off to you Mrgalleta
