Learning to play clear sounds on the djembe - the slap

In general people find the djembe drum to be relatively simple to pick up.

Although it may not take long to pick up a few grooves or take part in a casual jam, top quality playing is extremely reliant on clear crisp sounds.

Usually a "tone" note is the last one to master. However, in the beginning the the slap can be the most elusive. This is because it is a lot easier to get some semlince of a tone on a djembe.

The slap can be very frustrating, when you first start playing.

The easiest way to learn these techniques is to get djembe lessons from and experienced teacher.

in this guide, I hope to give you a couple quick tips to get your started.

When slapping always make sure you are very relaxed.

Let your arm hang loosely from your shoulder.

Make sure that the only movements are made by your elbow.

Lift up your forearm, so that it's next to your face.

No allow the arm to fall strike the rim of the drum, with the padded part of your hand where your fingers join it.

Visualise this process a few times in your head everyday as visualisation is extremely important when learning physical movements like this.

Don't forget to persevere and be patient!
