EMP Generator Schematic

These are my plans for an EMP Generator.  It uses flash circuits from disposable cameras to power the coil. I plan to make an instructable of it soon. Leave me any comments or tips. Thanks.

The parts list is as follows:

1project box
3 flash circuits (from disposable camreas)
3 AAA battery holders
1 9v battery clip
1 9v battery holder
1 390 ohm resistor
1 red L.E.D
1 green L.E.D
1 12 DC PC relay
2 L.E.D holders
5 momentary switches
2 on/off switches
wire
1 iron core coil
1 momentary switch (2 contacts)

The small diagram on the back is an alternate firing setup if the momentary switch with 2 channels is not available.

It would require another relay, momentary switch and 390 ohm resistor, and inexplicably a blue LED.

After looking at the original I am actually impressed with the elegancy of the design. Not bad for something I drew in class :)

So have you made an original yet?
XOIIO (author) in reply to JurassicMar 25, 2013. 9:47 AM
No, I've long since abandoned this, it was an interesting idea but it wouldn't have worked, and I haven't gotten any messages about people making their own.

would it be possible/safe to substitute the AAA batteries for higher voltage batteries to make the pulse last longer?

i have a feeling im gonna sound a bit like a noob but what is a project box...

The circuit looks like an LED blinker to me....

erm you do know that lots of army equipment is emp proof? (there goes the world domination plan)
abadon says: Nov 21, 2011. 11:19 AM
Here's a hint to build a directional EMP device with a ton of power. Take a wire strand and discharge a high-capacity high-voltage capacitor through it. The result is that the wire strand will "explode" and will release a huge (supposedly in the megawatts) EMP wave. However, in order to make it more effective, it is best to "explode" the wire in a parabolic dish so that the EMP will be focused and directed towards a target.
XOIIO (author) in reply to abadonNov 21, 2011. 2:40 PM
Yeah, thats simmilar to some military applications. I have an array of 30 400v capacitors I made, I'd just need to find some wire that works well.
Nyxius in reply to XOIIOMar 25, 2012. 3:03 PM
when the wire flashes you could try focusing it with a magnetic field. You could probably achieve higher efficiency by using it to limit broadcast frequencies. Just flashing the wire gives white noise.

If this works and you take over the world, I call second in command okay

Now this is all in theory, But for a large scale EMP device could you not use a modified version of Richard Willis's "power multiplyer" to achieve those Immense amount of required power. I started viewing this post to see if I could possibly make my kids have no power to there cellular phones with a push of a button.

"this is just a little doodle I made in class"

can anyone verify the soundness of the design? I'm debating between a modified version of this schematic and the one found here - http://72.52.208.92/~gbpprorg/mil/herf/Final_Report_David_Yeh.pdf
ARJOON says: Nov 11, 2011. 2:13 PM
wouldn't it be better with a 555 oscillator?
XOIIO (author) in reply to ARJOONNov 11, 2011. 11:41 PM
I'm not evens ure where that would go in the design, this is just a little doodle I made in class, and decided to share it.

Why is the triforce on these plans? Is this Ganon trying to pull off yet another crazy plan that will bring about world destruction? Will the "Hero of Instructables" rise to save us all?

That's my logo. I had made a logo before that was an X with likes heading out to each side, but then someone said it looked like a swastika, so I made this. Each section of the triangle has a letter in a secret code that correlates to a word, and the lines also have meaning, but it's too much to go into
Darkmaster6090 in reply to XOIIOAug 22, 2011. 1:03 PM
What is the logo called?
Sorry if I am being stupid
XOIIO (author) in reply to Darkmaster6090Aug 22, 2011. 1:27 PM
It isnt called anything, its just my logo
milamber says: Feb 10, 2011. 8:00 PM
how about swap the capacitors out for a 50kv flyback transformer and then strobe the circuit with a simple 555/relay flasher circuit
XOIIO (author) in reply to milamberFeb 10, 2011. 8:32 PM
That sounds like it might work. I haven't got much experience with 555's though.

I wander what the effects would do compared to a regular emp

Do you mind if i print off these imiages? I think I will try to build it.
XOIIO (author) in reply to Tobor 2.0Feb 9, 2011. 3:11 PM
Not at all, even better, We could make is a collab instructable. I lack the parts to create such a thing, but I would gladly offer help and advice, and we could post the project when it's done.

Good. Do you mind telling me what the 11th and last thing on the list are, beacause i couldn't quite make them out.
XOIIO (author) in reply to Tobor 2.0Feb 12, 2011. 3:52 PM
The last is some kind of switch, and i'm not sure about the 11th, but htere are 5 of them. I am going to look for the original schematic, sorry that the pics are a bit of a mess.
Tobor 2.0 in reply to Tobor 2.0Feb 12, 2011. 11:36 AM
P.s. on the seckond image could you tell me what it says under the picture and, the 9th thing on is a 12 . pc fan right?
XOIIO (author) in reply to Tobor 2.0Feb 12, 2011. 3:54 PM
The 9th thing is a 12 vold DC relay, and under the pciture i believe it is saying that you could substitue smaller resistors in place of the 390 ohm one, a 220 and 150 or something. I'm looking for the original schematic.

EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse. Simply put an EMP creates an intense but short pulse of EMI  (Electro Magnetic Interference). The power requirements nesisary to even disrupt electronics fro 10ft away are far beyond what is coming into you're house. To distrou electronics (the only way for it to last more then a few seconds) it would need to be many thousands of times stronger.

Think of it this way. A nuclear bomb creats an EMP wave but it's area of influence is much smaller then the explosion.

That being said it is possible that this schematic could yeald a working device but it would never be powerfull to disrupt a computv reseer 6 inches away. The only efect if any would be the loss of tv reception.
Nyxius in reply to VadimkFeb 5, 2010. 12:24 AM
this is true...military grade "directional" EMP generators have ranges of only several hundred meters, but have power requirements of several gigawatts of power.  The only way they can generate this much power and remain portable is to make the pulse width very short.

The air force has tested a small EMP generator that is compact enough to fit inside a AMRGGM missile (Advanced Medium Range Ground to Ground Missile).

 1.21 gigawatts?

Watt, Kilowatt, Megawatt, Gigawatt, Terawatt.

Movie note: Jigawatts was an accidental mispronunciation of Gigawatts entered into the script as a kind of equivocational jab at complex scientific naming procedures.

 one point twenty one jigawatts
