[idea] chip-sense

What if you had a socket you could just ram chips into, and find out what chip it was? That would be so useful, right? Discuss!

That would be great. I just got into electronics, coming from a software development and design background. And I would find this incredibly useful as others will i'm sure. So... It would need some sort of polling capability without the danger of frying the chip I suppose or be very quick switching to low.
