I'm not sure I fully understand the physiology behing it.... But after a while (10 to 15 mins), you start getting cramp in your legs, which become unbearable... The natural reaction is to let go off your hands to relieve the pain, which forces you to fall backwards. This unnatural position places pressure on your ribcage, and your breathing is restricted. Eventually, you pass out, and your lungs may collapse if you are not pulled out... I haven't tested this though. Colonel Fairbairn, who first described this technique, actually writes that this "will" (not "may") kill them. I assume he was speaking from experience... not a nice thought...

ok well yeah thats freaky. ok well i tried this to your instructions ,and I don't think it works on kids to well I could get out with little effort ,my little sister couldn't get her legs around the pole so I took her to a small smooth tree she could get out with almost no effort ,but I guess if your holding a gun to them it would keep them from trying to get away.

hmmm... have a look at these two pages to see if you were doing it correctly... Some people have been trying it since I made the first 'grapevine' video, and a few have managed to escape, but from the videos you can see that this is because they weren't doing it properly (didn't go down all the way), or because the tree they chose was the wrong size:

if you do it right (i.e. the tree is the right size, and you've been properly pushed down) the friction from your legs against the tree will prevent you from pulling yourself up. It will also make it difficult to corkscrew out. I'm not saying it's impossible to get out, but it's nowhere as easy as you might think...
