It is a parent's worst nightmare: the life changing words "Your child has cancer."

For the Winship family of Freedom, NY, those terrible dreams have become a reality. Five-year-old Hunter Winship was recently diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer which is characterized by rapidly growing tumors. "We've told him he has cancer and they're going to make his tummy aches go away and that he's going to lose his hair," said Hunter's mother Cheryl. Hunter began chemotherapy to try and reduce the size of his tumor but it was "too much for his little body," and it took a large tole on him physically and mentally said his mother. It was then, after seeing young Hunter suffer so much that mother Cheryl Winship, along with Hunter's aunt decieded to create a distraction for suffering Hunter: Paper airplanes in world record amounts.

The Guinness Book of World Records contains records for the largest and smallest planes, but not the most planes ever collected. For Hunter, setting a new world record would be a huge incentive for pushing through his cancer treatment and a great way to lift his spirits.

This is my entry into the Instructables Toss It Challenge and also a plead for help on behalf of young Hunter Windship.

accusing this person of using Hunter for sympathy votes to win a contest is quite sickening. you should be ashamed of yourselves...get your head out of your a$$es and show some compassion
xraver7086 says: Jan 30, 2011. 10:54 AM
how could you. this man has a cause he stands behind. he cares for this child. he wants him to push through. if i made this in time i would have made hundreds of paper airplanes, just to help Hunter through. you are the one who should be ashamed of yourself.

How many paper planes can we send??
lalettab says: Mar 17, 2008. 7:08 PM
did he set the record?
rippadollar says: Mar 15, 2008. 12:37 PM
I mailed 657 total that me and my sister made. A friend of mine, also had a contest with her Myspace Page Do Your Part Now. Where all money is donated in the name of Andrew McMahon, a leukemia survivor and pianist/vocalist of Something Corporate and Jacks Mannequin. Our proceeds benefit McMahon's own, The Dear Jack Foundation to support research for leukemia and other blood diseases. I think our total airplanes were over 7000. We aren't in it to win prizes, didn't even know there was one... anyway I just hope it helps him forget, for just one min that he isn't sick.
Doctor What says: Mar 16, 2008. 4:28 PM
Awesome! You are so dedicated! Unfortunately, I ran out of stamps (we don't use letters much...) But I like how you got other people involved. Which, unfortunately, just gave me the idea to get the school involved...
marc92 (author) says: Mar 4, 2008. 11:39 AM
How ever many you can fit in an envelope, or box, or delivery truck; it's up to you! He is trying to set a world record for most paper airplanes collected do the m ore the better!
Doctor What says: Mar 5, 2008. 11:16 AM
I ran out of stamps... But they are in the mail today!!!
lalettab says: Mar 17, 2008. 6:08 PM
Is there a deadline and where do we send them?
marc92 (author) says: Mar 17, 2008. 6:47 PM
The deadline was yesterday (the 16th) and the address was also shown in the Instructable.

rocknrollskwurl says: Mar 10, 2008. 5:39 PM
please say after he wins the airplanes are recycled, and i hope the dude wins! mabe it could be a world record for most people coming together to acheive a record. . . . . . . .
Thornburg says: Mar 7, 2008. 8:40 PM
I can tell that you have been to the hospital since you have a stamp. Am I correct.
marc92 (author) says: Mar 9, 2008. 3:04 PM
Nope, not from the hospital.
Thornburg says: Mar 4, 2008. 4:22 PM
This is a great instructable, but I was disappointed that you entered this in the Toss it contest. I will send paper airplanes to young Hunter, but if you win shouldn't the prize kind of belong to Hunter since you used him to attract us. I voted for you, hope Hunter gets better.
marc92 (author) says: Mar 4, 2008. 4:27 PM
Honestly, I entered this in the contest to attract more attention to Hunter's story because it is relevant to the contest. If I win the contest I may ask Instructables to make a donation to a charity of the Winship family's choice, rather than accept a prize.
Thornburg says: Mar 5, 2008. 4:59 PM
Wait.... If your trying to attract attention and not trying to win, why would you put a video of your airplane in flight.
marc92 (author) says: Mar 5, 2008. 5:10 PM
Like I said, I may, if I win, have Instructables donate to a charity rather than give me a prize, so, to be sure I complied with the contest rules, I added a video so I would not be disqualified.
Thornburg says: Mar 5, 2008. 5:41 PM
I'm sorry, but they may have already bought the prizes (not sure). I am not wanting to try to make you feel bad. If you honestly are going to give the money/prize to Hunter than you deserve the win.
marc92 (author) says: Mar 5, 2008. 5:47 PM
I will talk to Eric about this and if he is not willing to make a donation (or they have already bought/made the prizes) then I will have my prize shipped to Hunter and have the Instructables staff enclose a message to him telling him of this Instructable and contest.

ps. bolded to draw attention of other users
Thornburg says: Mar 5, 2008. 6:01 PM
Then I have no problem. I just did not want a good cause turn in to a contest. But if it is still a good cause by winning the contest, then go for it and I hope Hunter will get enough airplanes (and strength) to get better. Sorry about all fuss.
Thornburg says: Mar 4, 2008. 4:39 PM
Well your chances are looking good. I know that it was not intended to win or anything. But this is a good instructable for a good cause.
coatesy900 says: Mar 5, 2008. 9:57 AM
Not that I don't feel sorry for the kid, but this is a really pathetic way to go about winning a contest. Trying to gain sympathy votes (which is very clearly what you are trying to do) is not a fair way of winning, and I am disappointed that this Instructable has been made an entry to the "toss it" competition.
marc92 (author) says: Mar 3, 2008. 4:30 PM
