I decided to make rice krispie treats once again!  This time, little eggs for Easter.

Step 1: Supplies

Here is what I used:

Ingredients:

  • Rice Krispie Treat Mix - Rice Krispies + Marshmallows + Butter
  • Marshmallow Fondant (MMF) - Marshmallows + bit of water + Powdered Sugar + Food Coloring (I've used both liquid and gel)
  • Corn Syrup
  • Sprinkles

Step 2: Preparing

Get everything ready!

I don't want to be a broken record, I've talked about Marshmallow fondant before. Here is how much I ended up making.

  • 2oz white
  • 2oz pink
  • 2oz blue
  • 2oz yellow
  • 4 oz green

I started with 2 oz of each, but was afraid of running out so I made more green. It seemed like I could cover 9 - 10 eggs with 2 oz of fondant. So keep that in mind. Also, decorating won't necessarily take that much. I had leftovers with this amount of fondant.

Make your krispie mix and transfer it to a plastic container.

Grab your clean plastic Easter egg. I jammed it full of treat mix and then really smushed it closed. You want to hear the krispies crunching cause you want the egg to stay together. I smashed it closed and brushed off any krispies that weren't inside the egg, then I laid it on a piece of wax paper to harden a bit.

You can detach the top and bottom of the egg from each other. I left them together and they eventually broke apart anyway.

Step 3: Covering

I chose to cover all the eggs in a thin layer of fondant. You don't have to do this. I did cause I wasn't sure what I was doing. If you plan on decorating with sprinkles, cover with fondant. If you plan on decorating just some of the egg, cover it. But, if you plan on covering in stripes, I don't think you have to cover it. Just take a look and see how you feel.

I would suggest that you NOT cover them unless you are going to do limited fondant decorating or sprinkles decorating. Otherwise, I can't believe I'm saying this, it will be too much fondant. There, I've admitted it, I have run into too much sugar. So, if you want to cover it in dots or cover it in stripes, just do that, and not a bottom layer of fondant.

Step 4: Decorating

Time to decorate those eggs. I just did as many things as I could think of.

Stripes:

  • Roll out your fondant in longer strips.
  • Using a Pizza cutter, cut strip from the fondant.
  • Do this with all the colors you want.
  • Using corn syrup, stick the stripes on the egg.

Polka Dots:

  • Roll out the fondant.
  • Take something round, a piping tip or even the back of a piping tip works well.
  • Cut out all the spots you need.
  • Use corn syrup and attach to egg.
  • You see that plate of dots? it took almost all of those to completely cover my egg.

Sprinkles:

  • Decide how you will be decorating with sprinkles.
  • Put corn syrup where you want the sprinkles.
  • Sprinkle on the sprinkles over a plate to avoid a mess.
  • Do one color at a time and try to avoid pouring sprinkles on different colored sprinkles areas.
  • To cover with all colors at once, pour all the colors on a plate.
  • Cover in corn syrup and roll it around on the sprinkles.
  • Continue to pour sprinkles on the egg till it is covered to your satisfaction.

Do just these or use them in a combination to decorate your eggs.

Step 5: Done
