Easy Lego iPod Speaker for less than 2 $ ! by Agurri
P1020708.JPG
My sister wanted some speakers for her iPod. She showed me speakers she liked. It was some
speakers made with Lego... When I looked at the price...... 25+ bucks for a piece of Lego with some speakers.... I told her I could make a similar thing for ... free or almost... The only difference would be where the speaker would be located... on top instead of the bottom.

Step 1: Before Begining

Here what you will need to do the project :

- Lego block (will contain speakers) ( I took a 8 x 2 x thick lego block) - Found in my closet
- Lego block (will act as the back plate) ( 8 x 2 x thin) - Also found in my closet.
- 2 small speakers - I ordered 2 samples from Project Unlimited (Part number AS01508MR-R)
- Headphone jack (1/8") - Old one from a extension cable
- Hot glue
- Soldering Iron, Vacuum plunger, solder
- Dremel tool
- Needle-nose pliers, wire cutter, cable stripper
- Wires (you could use so telephone wires, would get the job done)
- Safety Glasses Important !!!!
- Spare time
- Patience

Optional:
- Multimeter/Continuity tester

Cost of this project : .... 0 $ USD... which is also 0 $ CND or 0 euro... God I like 0. As I said earlier, I found my Lego block in my closet.... I had an old extension cable for the audio jack and I ordered sample speakers... so, every components were free... :)

But, I guess if you didn't have an audio jack... this could add up... 1 or 2 bucks... or 10 minutes of hard-looking in you house to find a broken pair of headphones.

Should I Put My real name in the sample speakers  requesting page?
and what must i type in the "title" field?
Agurri (author) says: Jul 4, 2010. 12:54 PM
I don't see why you wouldn't put you real name. You are just ordering sample, it's not a crime ;). In the title field, I think it's either Mr or Ms, depending on your gender :)
TheBigT92 says: Jun 12, 2010. 1:54 PM
What did you put in for the application part of your sample order?

I don't quite remember what I wrote... but it must have been something like Personal project...

What did you put for the your company name when ordering the speakers?
cellopants says: Oct 7, 2009. 10:21 PM
[Your city name] Audio works.
lil_timmy1990 says: Jun 8, 2008. 2:31 PM
Super glue the back on. That would surely hold it.
Agurri (author) says: Jun 9, 2008. 2:29 PM
Actually... the problem is not how powerful the glue is... but where will it stick inside the case... there's nothing but some cables and speakers.... I had the same problem with the hot glue.
LargePaperCup says: Jul 21, 2009. 8:48 PM
try filling the brick with speakers with hot glue, let it dry and file the edges of the back pl8 and then super glue it
pryrofreak119 says: May 24, 2009. 6:38 PM
i use plyers to get that stuff out you just stick one of the tips inside the hole squeeze and twist and the excess plastic i use a file
Big_buck_hunter says: Apr 26, 2009. 4:33 PM
Hey when u ordered the sampels were they free thanks
AzraelUK says: Apr 7, 2009. 4:03 AM
The iPod connector does give you line out, much the same as the headphone jack. That'd make for a device more similar to the one your sister was after.
minimas1323 says: Mar 11, 2009. 6:29 PM
nvm it just worked for me. thanks
minimas1323 says: Mar 11, 2009. 5:55 PM
when i clicked a request for a sample speaker it said that there was an error
Agurri (author) says: Mar 11, 2009. 6:22 PM
Err, sorry, I can't help you there.... I ordered 3-4 times from this compagny without any problem... Just fill out the form correctly ... and well.. it worked for me :S.
wangtrevor says: Feb 26, 2009. 7:45 PM
can u use a soder for this step?
Agurri (author) says: Feb 27, 2009. 12:52 PM
As I explained in Step 2, I used a Dremel tool. Using this method, I could remove chunks of plastics, instead or burning plastic with the soldering iron.
wangtrevor says: Feb 26, 2009. 7:42 PM
how do you get the sample speakers?
Agurri (author) says: Feb 27, 2009. 12:50 PM
Clicking on the link provided in Step 1, you just ask for a quote sample from the compagny. Free of charge.

Like poi_pai said though, if i were to use earbud speakers, would the sound be the same as regular earbuds in a differen visible form or would it be, well, loud?
Agurri (author) says: Jan 10, 2009. 7:19 PM
Well... the sound would be the same...
wangtrevor says: Feb 26, 2009. 7:59 PM
how did u get it free fake aplication? could you help me email me a t wangtrevor@gmail.com (btw u have a very good mind thinking of how to make this )
wangtrevor says: Feb 26, 2009. 7:38 PM
where do u get the speakers?
pshinoright says: Jan 25, 2009. 6:42 PM
Ay if u want something a little louder try making these outa some of the bigger "duplo" legos. Then you would have more room for bigger speakers. xP cool idea
poi_pai says: Jul 19, 2008. 2:56 PM
Forgive me, I'm about as techno-savvy ar a jug of milk. Is there a difference between the speakers you used and the ones inside the earbud headphones, and if yes, what is it?
Agurri (author) says: Jul 19, 2008. 4:16 PM
Well... the short answer is no. You could do the project with the earbuds, and it's actually a pretty good idea. The long answer is kinda. When I did my project, I wanted something I could check the specs online ( size, power, etc.) I choose my speakers mostly because their size was small (15mm diameter) and power (1w). Oh, and they were also free :).
Ja2Pc says: Dec 26, 2008. 4:00 PM
Hey I know how to increase the volume, if you have an iPod go to your iTunes playlist and select all the songa, then right click and select "GET INFO" then a box will pop up, in the box select the option box and in there, there should be a volume increaser it is defult set to 0% so boost it up top 100%, sync your ipod and TADA!!! Hope that helped, visit my website www.krunched.com/popartme
poi_pai says: Jul 19, 2008. 6:16 PM
I guess my reason for asking is I'm just wondering if the sound was good, or if it was quiet and on the tinny side.
Agurri (author) says: Jul 20, 2008. 4:58 AM
I have to admit that I was really surprised by the sound level. I think it's louder than the earbuds but hey... don't expect some audiophile quality with the speakers I used... :P
wangtrevor says: Feb 26, 2009. 8:01 PM
how loud would the sound be the sound of mosqutios next to your ear? earbuds 3 inches away from your ear with full volume ect.email me at wantrevor@gmail.com l
Agurri (author) says: Feb 28, 2009. 10:05 AM
With the iPod standing in front of me, about 6 inches from me, I would say my Lego Speakers are ~1.5x-2.0x louder than the earbud, both at maximum sound. I guess I could try to make a video to show you how it sounds.
tba469 says: Nov 11, 2008. 2:59 PM
I liked this project, so I got some samples. Just finished trying it out, and I have to admit, I was a little disappointed in the volume of the speakers. I knew I wasn't about to get anything too great, but in a quiet room, I could still barely hear them. I'm going to try again, but with some headphone speakers that are about twice the size. Thanks!

Hey, I already had the wires and I had them for a while... so I don't really know where I got them. But, if you need some good wires and quick, take some telephone cord and rip it apart. They have 2 cables inside and they work great.

Vio says: Oct 15, 2008. 2:12 PM
Hi, did they arrive? did you have to pay some kind of customs duty?
loulou92 says: Oct 30, 2008. 1:11 PM
nope, its been i don't know how long, they never came! it could be due company name i used, seeing as i made it up! also, irish addresses seem to confuse most online forms (no postcode etc!).

Well.... it took about 2 weeks for me to get sample. Every time I ordered a sample from this company, it took about 2 weeks.
Austin0lsen says: Sep 24, 2008. 3:34 PM
i cant figure out how to get the 2 speakers. when i request the item it doesnt show up in basket do i need an account on the websit?
piraterogue says: Jul 5, 2008. 6:32 AM
If you are using another lego peice as the backplate you can glue it on with plastic model cement. It means you will never get the back place off but it is possible. The plastic model cement works by chemically melting the plastic and then when you show the peices together and let it dry them dry into one peice.
Agurri (author) says: Jul 5, 2008. 3:41 PM
Well, the problem isn't the type of glue I'm using. It's where the glue's going to glue... I can put the glue on the backplate.. but it won't glue to anything on the other side. That's what I realized with hot glue.
HippieAdrien says: Sep 14, 2008. 11:27 PM
super glue will stick legos together in seconds
deathorange says: Aug 27, 2008. 7:05 AM
Or you could of used hot glue on the edges of the lego brick that the speakers are in or you could of but a small piece of metal in the middle and then glue the back to that.
Father Christmas says: Sep 7, 2008. 8:24 AM
this doesnt seem like it would be worth the effort. it seems that a pair of headphones woud work jsut as well, unless of course, you were doing it for the principal of the matter.
Angel R says: Aug 28, 2008. 7:58 PM
could you possiably use the speakers in ipod headphones as speakers for thyis project. i say this because i've tried to get the free sample speakers you got but it doesnt seem to work for me.
Agurri (author) says: Sep 1, 2008. 7:23 AM
Hey Angel R, How come getting speakers doesn't work ? Go to the www.pui.com, click on the speaker you want (in my case AS01508MR-R). On the top of the page, you'll see a Request Sample box; put the quantity you want then click on the button. After, you'll need to go to your sample basket. They'll ask you what would be the annual usage (write a random number... i.e 10) then the Application (School Project is a good choice). Submit, enter your personals info, and you are set. But, ultimately, you could use iPod's earbuds
