I like making my own tote bags because the color, design and specifically the size is totally up to me.

I created my own design in Adobe Illustrator and sent it off to Spoonflower.com to have the fabric printed for me. The sky is the limit if you design your own fabric! I could've had the same design on both sides, but I decided to change it up just a bit. (I do the same when I sew pillows) I only used a portion of the yard so I added some other designs to the fabric (Sunflowers by Dianna Facci)

This bag was adapted from skiptomylou.org.

Step 1: What You Will Need

• 2 pieces fabric 19” x 16” (outside)
• 2 pieces fabric 19” x 16” (lining)
• 2 pieces 4” x 30” for straps
• 2 pieces 7.5” x 5” for pockets (optional)
• Thread
• Pins
• Sewing Machine

I put the straps on wrong and was too lazy to undo them but it still serves its purpose! I made it for my 12yo's birthday so he could carry his Pokémon stuff to tournaments instead of using his old school backpack. I'm getting ready to make myself a larger one too!

Wow! That's wonderful! Thanks for posting.

Didn't use a machine, and make some tweaks (was for a school project with a symbolic message). But love the concept and will definitely make another one properly again!

what fun!!

Love how it turned out! And so does my cousin, whom I made it for. Thank you so much for sharing! Great illustrations and simple instructions, just lovely! Thanks again!

Wonderful! Looks great!

And, you're welcome... Linda

I love this tote! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. Made my first one today for my daughter's birthday. I'll be making many more for the holidays. Thank you for sharing!

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it...and that you posted pictures!! yay for you. Nice job!
Lovely project!

Personalized, designer fabric just never occurred to me... but then again, I'm not much of a seamstress. ;-)

What a fabulous artistic approach!
Why, thank you!!
Love the fabric you designed. I've been wanting to try spoonflower forever.

Very cute bag too! :D
Oh you have to try them!! It's just the coolest thing to receive your own designed fabric. I surprised my sister with her watercolo sunflower pattern and she literally cried when she saw it. It was such a touching moment. :)

thanks!
