Cheap noise insulation for your earphones

Strange ideas occur to at the most weirdest of times sometimes when your about to pass out, when your bent over the toilet puking, waking up next to a dumpster etc..what ? is it just me. This one however popped into my head when my ears started hurting from jamming my hard non insulated earphones deep into my ears at unhealthy high volumes to block out the street noises.

Everybody who's ever bought an earphone with an earbud has got a bunch of extra ear buds which are provided with it .use it to make a normal,cheap n good ol' fasioned (yep the ones i was jammin into my ears) earphones comfortable and noise insulated.
trust me it really gives u satisfaction to convert a cheapo earphone into something a bit better (maybe much better) . Also its damaging to your ears to listen at high volumes.
i've found that after using this method to insulate my earphones i have been listening to songs at 18th volume instead of the 23-24th.

Step 1: Things you'll need

1 an old pair of earphones(without earbuds).
2 tools-scissors, blade
3 some earbuds (atleast 2) .

Thank you SO much for this i too had a bunch of junk extra earbud things from broken earbuds and my ipod earphones protector stuff rubbed off after a while.(fkkn apple... -_-) and it hurt my ears as i put them in and it was all around uncomfortable. anyways; this works perfect thanks!! very simple ;]

Wanted to thank you for this. I had a ton of the silicon ear buds sitting around and you helped me put 2 & 2 together. I had to put 2 pieces of rubber for one the right ear bud but this works great for holding the thing in your ear.

I just bought some earbuds and am quite impressed how well they cancel noise. But, they also fit into my ear canal. I have some earphones similar to yours. Obviously they do not fit into the ear canal. But, yours still seal against the outer portion of the ear canal. Is that correct? I thought maybe you would make them extend into the ear canal somehow. What kinds of noises have you been able to attenuate? Street traffic? How are they on a jet airliner? I listen to Podcasts, etc. Thanks. Congratulations on your first Instructable. In my experience the people who will be the hardest on you with their comments have submitted no Instructables of their own. The rest of us appreciate any sincere effort.

i know its not the best but better than notin right?
but they really make them more comfortable to use

Thank you for your response. I am experimenting to find earphones that do a good job on a jet airliner without turning up the volume to unhealthy levels.
