Electric Bikes

Electric vehicles and hybrids become more and more practical and attainable every day. As batteries and electric motor technologies improve we are sure to see more and better offerings. In true instructables fashion there are some great examples of what people are doing now right within our community. Whether you are interested in an electric motorcycle, an electric assisted bicycle or maybe a stationary bike to generate power, you'll find it here.

Check out some of these projects you can make or find inspiration for something new!

is there a way to build an electric bicycle, that uses solar or some other way of recharging the batteries while you ride??

And can this be made so that it does weigh 200 tonnes(figuratively speaking)??

IF, this can be done, it sounds like it would be one way to spend all week riding your bike without having to plug the batteries in.....but it would have to be built by someone smarter than I.

The problem with hooking a solar panel to the batteries is that a solar panel is very inefficient. Between 10-15% of the sunlight that hits the panel is turned into electricity. It would take longer to charge the batteries using sunlight instead of the wall outlet.

It would be a way to charge when your out in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery though.

AHHHH OK....

I never realized that solar panels were THAT inefficient.

TY for enlightening me Sir.

Hmmmm....back to the drawing board.... :)

TY for sharing. I bid you peace.

mount a solar battery charger on the bike (notherntools.com).

Can someone post an instructable on how to build a bike that recharges by the rider pedaling? I know it can be done, i just don't know HOW-TO.     : )

The problem isn't making it, you could just use the crank to turn a dynamo and then link this to a motor.

The problem is it's highly inefficient. A chain drive cycle system delivers 98% of the rider's power to the back wheels, incredibly efficient given its relative simplicity. However, overall an electric motor is typically only 80% efficient and an electric alternator 60% efficient. This gives a combined efficiency of 60% x 80% or 48%. In other words, it would be twice as hard to move an alternator/electric motor combo as it would be to move an equivalent cycle. Plus, it would be a lot heavier, which adds to the inefficiency. Higher efficiencies of the electric system could be obtained, but it's a long way to go to achieve anything rivaling a chain drive and higher efficiencies are usually a result of narrowing down the operating parameters of the motor/alternator. It wouldn't even make sense to use the dynamo to charge batteries as this would lower the efficiency even more.

Hence, the most efficient method for an electric bike is a chain drive from pedals to the wheels with additional electric drive via batteries/motor.

Anyway, as the Dark Lord, shouldn't you be riding a dragon or a ghostly wraith stallion, black preferred?

recharges what the battery?
Aug 13, 2011. 12:58 PMThe Dark Lord says:

Yea, recharges the battery when the rider pedals.
Sep 2, 2011. 7:52 PMEMAMD says:
you must have another motor in reverse rotation in charging your battery.
Aug 22, 2011. 7:15 AMtim127 says:
you would just need to have the motor separate from the pedals but on the same chain and have the battery attached to the motor.

it would also be nice if there was an instructable to convert manual wheelchairs into electric using electric bike motors.

It is my experience that France has some of the nicest people in the world, HOWEVER, their government has some really weird & PITA(Pain in the ***) laws. Some of the laws there need to go....

Again, The people of France are really nice, respectful, & accomadating. it's just that they have a lousy gov't.

Why do childish remarks have to show up everywhere we get a group together? People be supportive of one another.

I think a lot of people want to get out of their gas eating cars and go to a simpler form of travel not just to save money but to get back into a closer relationship with their surroundings.

Being able to smell a whiff of sweetness when moving by a flower garden, feeling the morning sunrise or the light mist of dew in the air. Most of us get way to little "green time"now.

And way to few of us are willing to use elbow grease to build our ideas into reality, my self included. What a loss to the world and to our communities.

Here in France, you are not insured if your electric bike's motor is more than 250W and if it's not "assisted" (the motor is only on when you pedal).
So forget not sweating going to work, nanny state is seeing to it.

I just wanted to add that riding an electric bike does not exclude pedaling. In fact I get a good work out on my electric mountin bike. Also, it makes riding more fun, so I ride more often. I use the power when I need a break, hit some mud or sand or just want to fly down the trail. Also putting an electric kit on a good bike helps you learn to construct, fit, modify etc. It is also a good lesson in DIY electricity. PEACE

People have been putting motors on bikes for over 100 years....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Man_TT

If you want to pedal that's fine... and healthy if you can do it. However please remember that some people like to go fast... I still find it slightly ironic that nearly everyone has a 3000lb fossil fuel/dinosaur blood eating monster of a car but very few have a nice roadbike.

Lets convince people that electric and pedal power are the way of the future ;)

I just stumbled across this site looking for plans for a trailer for my bike. I have just purchased an electric bike to ride back and forth to work and it is great. I am in a management posistion so pedaling and getting sweaty on the way to work is not an option for me so I use the motor to get to work and I pedal home. It is great fun. I bought my bike from Hummingbike.com. They are the cheapest I could find and I am more than happy ith the quality, plus I can fold it up and put it in the car to take on vacation.

Electric bikes are great for going farther and faster than one normally would on a bike. Like commuting 40Km 25Mi to work every day super fast.

They can fill the role of a car, giving that extra boost when you want/need it.

Sure some folks are hardened athletes but others are middle-aged moms who want enjoy riding a bit further and haul heavy loads without hurting their knees and without relying on a friggin` car.

Too bad most ready-made electric bike are crappy. A good retrofit kit on a good bike could really turn it up to 11 though.

Ahem.....some of us are physically challenged (prosthesis) and using an electric bike helps us go cycling with a group!
Dec 19, 2010. 3:00 PMdianaw says:
Thanks for posting that reminder Amrit.
You make a great point.

As I'm reading the comments I'm saddened by all the self-centered unthinking and insults. There are many people who want to do what they can physically and environmentally- an electric bicycle can be very helpful to seniors, people with knee or hip problems and other physically challenged individuals. They/we can get some exercize by pedaling but switch to the motor when we tire or if the pain gets intense. Plus the added benefit of helping environmentally by using a bike to do errands instead of a car can be quite satisfying.

Plus- there are many of us who may have a physical disability or older and live on subsistence income so can't afford cars.

there is a level of pride in being able to be independent and not have to rely on someone for the smallest thing.

I recently gave up my car and came to Instructibles searching for trailer ideas- the electric option sounds great having knees that are a might creaky these days.

Exactly! The point is, we shouldn't argue about whether electric or pedal bikes are better - just do what you enjoy and what you find most satisfying and I'm sure that Instructables can help you to build, buy or scavenge what you want.

The last one makes you pedal to power stuff. You could pedal to charge your electric bike. Like work out on a rainy day and then on a sunny day take the electric bike for a ride. Then again most people probably wouldnt pedal for 6 plus hours to charge an electric bike.

wow! good for you ski4jesus and 68K! now grow up and find somewhere else to post your comments! electric and motorized bicycles have huge advantages! For me, it saves money! no car, no insurance, no gas, no registration, and sense I live in AZ-no heat stroke for me or my 1 1/2 y/o! and I'm pretty sure Jesus had more of an "I 'm glad you found something you enjoy, keep it up" attitude instead of I'm better then you bc I'm me! Go back and read your bible! I'm actually ashamed to call you a brother right now! that's not how Christ taught me to treat other people! this is not what He died for!

Jan 9, 2012. 9:25 AMM0HIZ says:
It was mostly the : "...I'm pretty sure Jesus had more of an "I 'm glad you found something you enjoy, keep it up" attitude instead of I'm better then you bc I'm me!" part, but also it felt it was a little irrelevant to the topic of electric bicycles. I apologize if I have offended you.

ok! i was just saying i like to ride my bike! sorry if i made it seem like i was bragging, i just dont have a road bike, so i ride my bike a lot. and if you are a brother in the faith, im very impressed. peace out and have a good day, jesus loves you!
