Make an Exposed Bone Fx to compliment your Zombie makeup or accident victim costume! This effect looks best on your forehead, cheek, chin or jaw line. It can be done on the hand, but if you do, use just a strip of white card stock to simulate a hand bone. Most materials used can be obtained at your local costume shop or online! (Be cool, support your local costume shop!)

Word of caution, a small but significant number of people can have severe allergic reactions to Latex. If you are unsure, please apply a small amount of latex to the inside of the your elbow and keep it there for at least one hour. If there is no rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing remove the latex and continue. If there is any reaction at all, remove the latex and seek medical help! When applying latex, make sure that the area is FREE OF HAIR or that you have a high tolerance for pain!
MATERIALS NEEDED:

Shiny white thin cardboard or card stock
Spirit Gum
Spirit Gum Remover
Nose and Scar Wax
Thick Blood or Fresh Scab
Liquid Latex or Flexible Sealer
Bruise Wheel or Trauma Stack
Makeup Spatula or Popsicle stick
Stipple Sponge

Step 1:

STEP 1:

Start off with clean, dry skin. Apply a layer of spirit gum. Allow to dry for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Press a small piece of white cardboard into spirit gum, hold in place until sealed to skin. Make sure that the Spirit Gum covers an area of skin larger than the card stock!

Step 2:

Take a small piece of Nose and Scar Wax and roll into a small rope. Press into edge of cardboard and skin. Continue rolling small amounts of wax into ropes until edge of cardboard is completely covered. Make sure you work with the wax quickly, as the longer you handle it, the stickier it gets!

Step 3:

Take a make-up spatula and begin to smooth the wax into skin. When you have the outer edge of the wax semi-flattened, dip a Q Tip into Spirit Gum Remover and use it to smooth out the wax and blend the edges into your skin. Once Wax is blended into skin, use the spatula to make sure that the edge of the Wax touching the cardboard is rough and resembles torn skin.

Step 4:

Cover Nose and Scar Wax with Liquid Latex or Flexible Sealer. Extend onto bare skin to “seal" the Wax to your skin. Failure to do so will lead to the wax cracking and falling off! Make sure that area that you apply the Latex to is HAIR FREE! Allow the Sealer or Latex to dry completely before proceeding!

Step 5:

Once the Latex or Sealer is dry, take your Bruise Wheel or Trauma Stack and begin to color around the edge of the "bone" on the Latex and Wax. I apply the makeup with a Stipple Sponge and then blend the makeup with my fingertips using a patting motion. Add in dabs of yellow and purple to give a swollen red, bruised look.

Step 6:

Apply Colorless Powder with a Powder Puff. Put a small amount of Powder on Puff and smear in with your fingertips. Press the Puff firmly into the cream makeup with a patting motion. This helps to "set" the cream makeup and prevent it from smearing. Dust off any excess powder with a large makeup brush.

Step 7:

Take a makeup Spatula or Popsicle Stick and add Fresh Scab or Thick Blood all around the edge of the Wax and slightly onto the bone. Add a few drops of Stage Blood. This fx should be applied BEFORE any other makeup is used on the face.

Step 8:

Here are some examples of the exposed bone effect. The steps I have shown here were done on my hand, because it was easier to do on myself! The first example is a forehead, the second is a chin effect before being sealed and with Bone Wax (difficult to work with!)
