Facebook LED blink on new notifications and messages

Step 4Connect the LEDs to the parallel port

Connect the LEDs to the parallel port

If you are using a printer cable, check the third picture for reference, otherwise, check the second.

Connect the longer lead* of the first LED to bit 1 (check the pictures mentioned above), and the shorter to any of the ground (GND) pins (it doesn't matter which one you choose). This will be the LED that will blink when you have a new notification.**

Connect the longer lead of the second LED to bit 6, and the shorter to any of the ground pins. This will be the LED that will blink when you have a new message.

To check if the notification LED is working click here (stop blinking).
To check if the message LED is working, click here (stop blinking).
If the LEDs aren't working, make sure that the LEDs are correctly inserted (try moving them a little), and that the LED Blinker is configured correctly and running.

*: If the leads of your LED have the same length then find the flat side of your LED. Connect the lead of that side to any of the ground pins, and the other to the bit pin.

**: It is possible to change that, but you will have to make a tiny change to the Greasemonkey script.

Really nice idea for anyone using Facebook. A bit dangerous for the printer port. But it could damage the printer port as you are only guaranteed a TTL output that can source 2.6ma or sink 24ma. A LED connected without any dropper resistor could (and will!) take more than these values of current, this could damage the printer port/PC Mainboard. As the printer port does not supply a 5 volt line, it is not possible to use the higher current available for sinking, so this circuit must be sourcing..... At least a 2K Ohm resistor should be in series (if sourcing!) and tiny ultra high intensity LEDs should be used to keep currents down but indication levels up. Do not use just any LED without knowing its spec. If anyone needs printer port specs (they are easily found on the web but often forget to remind anyone about the limited current available) I can send them.... A good fix would be to get a 5 volt supply onto the cable in some way and use the sink current of the TTL outputs....still with a dropping resistor for safety. Also I saw no warning here that many Laptops only use 3.3 volts on the printer port and not 5 volts and are even more sensitive to incorrect usage..... Another good move would be an add oncard that could be quickly replaced if the worst came to the worst!!! There are printer ports that can source more current, but seldom is it a good idea to drive a LED directly with no dropper, even on these. They are still usually impossible to identify anyway, so be safe....not sorry! Its still a great post and once the current (pun intended!) problem is addressed, will be very usefull for many people I feel. Well done and thanks.....
