Fancy Hard Boiled Eggs

Did you know you can form hard boiled eggs into different shapes. It's quite easy to do.
The trick is to use a newly boiled egg that is still hot.

Step 1: Materials needed

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Rubber bands
  • Molds/shapes

For my molds, I glued some old plexi-glass together in a 90 degree angle.
They are about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide.

You don't need anything too fancy, just look around the kitchen and see what you could use. Any small container that would fit an egg snugly but not too tight will work. Be creative.

Step 2: Square eggs

Place the hot egg in one of the pieces and add the other piece to form a square. Hold it together with rubber bands and put it in the refrigerator for about 30 min until the eggs cools and hardens.
When you remove the egg it should be nice and square.

Step 3: Heart shaped eggs

For a heart shaped egg I start by gently pressing the egg with my thumb into the corner of one piece. The egg will flatten a bit.
Next, place the second piece, corner down, on to the egg and press gently to make an impression.
Be gentle, too much pressure will break the egg.

I held it together with rubber bands. Do not double the rubber bands, it will be too much pressure.
Place the egg in the refrigerator for about 30 min and let the egg harden.

Step 4: Oblong/rectangle

For this shape, I flattened the egg a bit and pushed it into a popsicle mold. It was a tight fit so I sprayed it with some cooking spray.

Step 5: Enjoy your fancy eggs

What a great idea !! The kids could do this for Mothers day (with some help) A really nice way to make breakfast OR a salad look special !!
Maybe I just haven't paid close enough attention, but I've never seen this before. I love the idea that you can change the shape to match the mood and occasion. Thanks for the instructable.

This technique has been used in Japan for their cute lunch boxes for a while. Amazon sells some cheap plastic molds for whatever shape you want:

TIP: You need to shell the eggs before trying this.

I love molded eggs. They are very popular in bento lunches. If you check on j-list.com they have some cute molds made just for eggs. I have a bunch of them in different shapes, even Hello Kitty. You can also find then on ebay for cheap.
