Introduction: Faux Unicorn Taxidermy

Hello! This is my first Instructable! I hope you find it helpful. I'm not quite finished this piece of work yet, so it might be a while until you see the finished product.

What you will need:
1 x Foam taxidermy of a Fawn. (I suggest van dyke's taxidermy.)
Air dry clay
Pair of glass taxidermy eyes
White acrylic paint
White flocking powder
White tibetan lamb hair.

I ordered my foam taxidermy from Van Dykes online store for $54. The glass eyes cost $7.50

Step 1: Air Dry Clay Face

Step One: Covering the head with Air-Dry Clay

Since you cannot bake the foam taxidermy (I assume this would cause a fire hazard. I wouldn't know, i've never tried it) I used Air Dry clay by Fimo. I had never used it before, and found that if i did not wet the clay enough, it would dry with huge cracks in it. You can see in the image that I have started sculpting the head to look more like a horses. (Big nostrils are a big difference between fawn and foal)

Step 2: Insert Taxidermy Eyes

So, the taxidermy looks a little creepy without eyes! So! You can easily pop in the eyes. If you made the eyes - make sure theyre the right size, and match the holes in the taxidermy.

Once you have glued the eyes in, I used air dry clay again to make the eyelids around it. You will need to be careful with this, to make sure the eyelids are even on both sides (also, make sure the eyes are pointing in the same direction)

You can make the eyelids by putting a strip of clay above and below the glass eye, and then smoothing it into the face.

Step 3: Ears and Body

For the ears I used pieces of canvas in a diamond shape. I pinched the ends, and glued the tabs onto the side of the head. My ears are a little small - i suggest you make yours a little bigger!!
I then covered up where I glued the ears with air-dry clay - so it looks like theyre coming right out of his head!

Next step: Covering the rest of the body in clay
This helps when you are painting it - as i find the foam is difficult to cover.
Make sure your clay is nice and wet, and smooth it over the surface. Let it dry naturally. keep out of sun.

Step 4: Painting

I used white acrylic paint to cover my horse.  You will probably need to do a few coats.

Next steps: the unicorn horn, hooves, flocking powder, and fur!
Stay tuned!
