The idea for this project is to make a simple fire and flood alarm to use and protect the kitchen by repurpose a XP95 heat detector.
This detector runs on 24V and only works with addressable panels that is the central fire alarm this can support 125 devices per loop and can be expanded to 2 loops in the most basic modules.
The address is provided by the detector with a card located in the base.
This detector uses a thermistor to measure the different temperatures, this thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varys with the temperature.
Heat detector it´s the ideal solution for using in a kitchen better than the smoke detector that is more susceptible to water vapor, dust and smoke provided by cooking.
This will cover for the fire detector, for the flood aspect we will use a simple PCB with two lines of contact that will bridge in contact with water.
This will detect any existence of a rupture on a water pipe our a leak on a dishwasher our washing machine.

Step 2: Gather the Material
You will need for this project:
- XP95 heat detector with base ( our a simple termistor )
- Fire siren ( any kind of siren will do )
- PCB board
- Arduino board
- Project boxe
- 12v power supply with 1.5A
- ATMEGA 328P-PU
- 16Mhz cristal
- 2 x 22pf capacitor
- 2x 10k resistor
- 1k resistor
- 12v relay
Step 3: Get Started
Because the XP95 doesn't work as a stand alone device we will need to tape in and use just the termistor and led and use a arduino board to reed the termistor resistor value.
Of course you can use just a termistor for this project and not the XP95 detector but i had this lying around and i decided to use this.
I open the device and brige the signals of the termistor and led to the pads of the detector.
You can run the code with a Arduino board our make a bare bone arduino like you see on the schematic.
The water sensor can be made out of a PCB with two lines of solder close together, when in contact with water this connection will be a shunt.
Use a switch to power on and off this circuit, in case of fire our flood this will be use to shutdown the alarm.
Step 4: How It Works
On the arduino with everting connect , plug to the pc and open Arduino IDE.
On the sketch change the thermistor trigger relay value to a high number like 700
Open serial monitor on arduino IDE and you will see the thermistor value changing according to temperature, using a hair dryer blow hot air to the thermistor and see the value rising, use this high value to set as the thermistor trigger relay value.
Connect a led to the digital 11, this led is the led on the fire detector this will help you troubleshoot what trigger the alarm, if is the heat detector the led is on, if is the flood detector the led is off.
Digital 11 is the 17 pin on the ATMEGA328p-pu.
Step 5: Final Thoughts
This is a nice project to have at your kitchen our in another place at your home.
Because i have my dishwasher and washing machine in the kitchen the flood detector will trigger if any of this devices leaks.
In case of fire produced by a electric short circuit of any appliance the heat detector will sound the alarm.
The flood detector is set between the dishwasher and washing machine for rapid trigger.
The heat detector is set in the middle of the kitchen ceiling, this is the ideal place to cover all the kitchen area.
In my case a place the bare Arduino inside a project box with the fire sire attach to the box lead, this set all on top of the kitchen cabinet.
You can place the power switch near the kitchen top for ease access.
