Introduction: Fishing With a Safety Pin

About: I have always lived a life of making whatever i need, when i need it. after discovering this site i have sung it's praises from the hilltops, trying to get others to come check it out. I plan to build my own s…

Fishing with a safety pin ,you know we have all had that image go though our minds as children.
Well it would seem that it has never left mine,I have always had the safety pin fishing idea buried just under the surface.
One day while I was visiting the local sporting goods section looking for fishing supplies,I was doing my usual, griping about wanting this and that but not wanting to pay the extortion prices I seemed to be required to pay.It hit me like a ton of bricks straight from my childhood fishing with a safety pin days,I could save myself three dollars every time I made one of these. And believe me I have lost count of how many" three dollars" I have saved myself from spending.

Step 1: Safety Pin

First off it is pretty obvious we are going to need a safety pin for our fishing expedition, you can call it a diaper pin if you want, I dont think it matters to the fish what name you go by.
People normally snicker when I first open my fishing tackle box, they find the beads, safety pins, wire, feathers, fur, yarn, and super glue, pretty funny. But after an hour I am normally filling request to make me this, or can you , or have you ever tried. By then it is me that is snickering as I know they will soon be shopping for their fishing supplies in the fabric dept. just like me.

Step 2: Bending, Tweaking, Wrapping, Twisting, mild Cussing As You Might Poke Yourself If Not Carefull

After opening your safety pin you can remove the safety cap be gently gripping the cap with needle nose plyers.A slight twisting motion pulls cap from safety pin, picture two and picture three i have used needle nosed plyers to bend ,tweak, twist, and wrap both ends into small circles. You are also allowed to spread the two arms apart further ,or push them closer, it is your choice based on the performance.
Picture four is a better close up to show that precision is not a deciding factor here, after all we are not making a jewelry box.
For a more comical effect please insert the sounds of sawing, hammering, drilling, and a chainsaw into the background as you click from one picture to the next.

Step 3: Putting on Some Hardware and Flare

I would like to tell you that I put the hook on last, as any smart man would have been inclined to do,... but  as I am destined to leave most of my wisdom at the door when I step outside. I began by putting a swivel on and then secondly a hook in place. Hence, the alledged cussing aforementioned earlier. But nevermind that, your goal here is to attach a swivel to all three circles in your fishing safety pin,and then a piece of metal (with small hole drilled into it), to one arm, at the end of the swivel located there. This small piece of metal I cut out and drilled myself, in order to save even more, It did not dawn on me that I could have flattened the head that i removed in the first step, and used the result as my metal" flash attention getter" for the fish, untill I was writing up this article.
Picture four is the end result of my first safety pin fishing assembly I rigged up for this instructable. In case you are curious I am sitting right on the creek bank as I do this, wishing I had a laser cutter to make my safety pin fishing flasher (piece of metal), much easier to cut out in bulk.
Before I go on,... I need to point out it took me many,... many minutes to convince my wife the importantance of this instructable.Cutting grass would have to wait. Cleaning up the trash in the yard,... sorry babe i can't. Weeding the garden,but,... but,...but the world needs my knowledge in order to save money. And as much as I hate, really hate to put all that very important stuff on the back burner,.. I must  go fishing, so I can use the valuable time to take pictures and document the steps needed to save money.
Boys let me tell you I am smooth,... all those practiced, and well thought out words, achieved my goal.( notice I did not mention the fact that I also gave her forty dollars to go buy herself something. )

Step 4: Video Testing of Safety Pin Fishing Rigs

Test of fishin safety pin to show the action it provides here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6oeq2_fOcQ

Testing of fishing safety pin rigging two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z0P3XR5H0A

Rigging number three was just to show you another type that can be used this way(red worm),the fish only bite on white squiggle tails in my creek so i didn't even get it wet.

The last picture did not last one cast, the yellow is a store bought rooster tail, and the other is a version I made useing a paper clip. The end results was a small perch hit the set up ,but the paper clip could not hold up. I like the safety pin idea better,it is much stronger.

Step 5: Todays End of Day Tallying
