Fix any CD.... with Peanut Butter!

 by Tomcat94
Have an old, scratched up CD that won't play anymore? That CD probably held many memories for you, and you wish you were able to play it, if only it wasn't so scratched up...

But now you can re-live those memories using the magic of peanut butter! Don't spend five bucks on "Scratch out" that only makes things worse, when you can fix your scratched up CD's George Washington Carver style!

Step 1: What you need...

As the title of this instructable suggests, you really only need one thing:

PEANUT BUTTER!!!

But If you want to get technical, then here's a detailed list...

Peanut butter
You need only one tablespoon of peanut butter. Please, use common sense and DON'T use chunky peanut butter. Please.

Scrubbing utencil
You also need some way of rubbing the peanut butter. Use napkins, paper towels, polishing cloth(it's reccomended you don't use a good one), or even your fingers.

Water
Now, most CD warnings say to not submerge the disk in water. But you need SOME way of getting that peanut butter off, right? Besides, we're not "submerging", we're "washing".

I used water to get it off, and it worked fine.

Is spit a good substitute for water? Water costs are too outrageous these days .

Would this work on a trashed XBOX 360 game? I was playing my favorite game and the 360 got knocked over.

Would this work for Mobile devices.

I would advise vegimite or marmite, or if that does not work try normal butter.

account3r2 says: Mar 27, 2012. 9:13 PM
W-w-w-w-wait just a second... (while i s-s-s-st-stu-s-stutter a moment...) I submerge my discs all the time cleaning all the fingerprints off of the DVDs and such I get from Netflix.. I never knew that you're not supposed to submerge them... oh well...
Tomcat94 (author) in reply to account3r2Apr 1, 2012. 12:33 PM
Yes, I never knew that either until I actually read the warnings and such on certain DVD cases that tell you how to care for your disks. I don't see the harm in it though-- I've had countless things say to not submerge your disk, but I do it anyway, and everything's just fine.

By the way, I have a speech impediment from birth that causes me to stutter a lot. You're not funny. :/

NOT YOU!!!

You should NOT make a circular motion.
It should be done axially
from the center out to the edge
not in a circle

The PS1 brings back so many memories for me. So many hours of Crash Bandicoot!
Mauigerbil in reply to Tomcat94Nov 13, 2011. 10:43 AM
I, too played Crash Bandicoot, exept I played it on the original Xbox. We had one until I was 7. Crash TwinSanity was my childhood game. It was usually followed with episodes of my childhood cartoon, Ed, Edd,and Eddy. :D I remember those days...

oh...ok
quantumkittty in reply to builderkidjJul 6, 2011. 6:03 PM
lol, actually, ps1 has multiple colors. black just came out as a "special" disk. nothing special about it. ps2 was ABLE to read blue disks, but you needed the newer model of ps2. they had normal disks usually. ps3 is the same
nclark557 in reply to quantumkitttySep 22, 2011. 1:58 PM
you don't need the newer model of ps2 to read blue discs i have an old ps2 "phat" that reads blue discs just fine
R167 in reply to nclark557Jun 10, 2012. 9:04 PM
1. I didn't even know that the colors made a difference
2. my friends ps2 off of ebay won't play a blue disk, maybe is is just bad... don't know...

I used this as a birthday present for my stepdad. You see, he bought GTA 4 a while ago and it got badly scratched up to the point that it was unplayable. Sadly, another Cd I was cleaning with PB split clean in two! I don't blame you or anything, but my little brother really liked Scooby Doo.......

I could be wrong, but I think all this does is fill the scratches with the oil from the peanut butter. Peanut butter isn't terribly abrasive (unlike methods using toothpaste, which usually is). A while back I had a Tom Petty CD that wouldn't work because it was all scratched up, so I rubbed it on my hair (hadn't showered yet) and, yes, the oil filled the scratches, and it worked. (Somewhat nasty, but hey, it worked!)
StaticEmbrace in reply to DarwinfishAug 28, 2011. 7:40 PM
If all it needs is the oil from hair, peanut butter, what have you; wouldn't it be easiest to try a tiny bit of vegetable oil? That way you don't have sticky goo everywhere and there's no need to forgo bathing. Just a thought.
Darwinfish in reply to StaticEmbraceAug 28, 2011. 8:42 PM
I suspect that the veggie oil is too light to do much good. The peanut butter/hair oil are more of a paste than a fluid, so they'll probably stick better. Something like Crisco might work, though obviously wipe it down well before sticking it in the player.

And yes, there are many ways of doing this, and most of them are better than my ghetto method. :D
Derpancakes says: Jul 7, 2011. 3:18 PM
hmm.... i followed the instructions but it didn't work...
since a lot of people said this works, my CDs must have reeeealy deep scratches... oh well
Apollo2947 says: Jun 14, 2011. 2:26 PM
Wash the peanut butter off. Or eat it off.
