Step 4Gettin' to buisness: Remove the heatsinks

Right, first thing we gotta do is open this sucka up. I'll point you to the tutorial I read, because opening the 360 is an Instructable in itself.

http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=2610&p=2

You need to remove everything from the metal case(if you can't get the fans out, that's fine). Set the motherboard on a clean surface, like a newspaper. Put the DVD drive, screws, plastic case and other parts someplace where they can't get harmed.

Now you gotta remove the heatsinks from the processors. This is very nerve-wracking. I used a small flathead screwdriver, and pried two or three of the X-Clamp's legs from the posts attached to the heatsinks. But if the blade of said pointy object were to slip, it could take out a bunch of tiny parts as it scrapes across your motherboard. The solution?

Put a piece of corrugated cardboard over the motherboard, where the screwdriver blade would rip through. :D . So if it were to slip now, it'll just hurt a severed piece of a box.

You'll want to pop off 3 of the bracket legs, because the 4th one won't have anything holding it on. Once you get the clamps off, the heatsinks will come off on top side of the motherboard(you may need to tug on them a bit if the thermal paste is sticky). The next step deal with the heatsinks themselves.

Just started opening up the case. Got a friends xbox with the condition that if I fix it, I can keep it. Regarding the tutorial on taking the console apart, I recommend a T8 as opposed to a T7.

second that... i got one screw out with a t7 and the others were giving me fits so i went out and bought a t8 and it fit snugly.

If you pry inside against the post towards the middle of the X, it relieves the pressure on the opposite arm of the bracket and it pops right off!  No worries about slippage and damaging MB.

why dont you just pull the entire mother board and just unscrew the screws holding the x clamps.  thats what i did seemed to work just fine no priing. might save you a lot of anger and time i did it is 5 mins

Instead of using a flathead screwdriver, I used a Leatherman tool with a Can Opener to pry it from the on the inside of the hole. Then once I got the clamps up a little, I used the needle-nosed pliers on the tool to pull back on the X-clamps, holding the tool perpendicular to the board and clamping down on the outside edge of the hole. This allowed me more room for error and less nerve-wracking because if I slipped, it didn't dive it's way into the delicate motherboard.

This worked like a charm for my 360, going 5 days strong.
Just wanted to add a little advice for those attempting this the 1st time. DO USE CARDBOARD & start with the outside corners not the middle ones like he shows in the pics.
When you take the x clamps off have a buddy help and do it like this: Take 2 small flat head screw drivers and slip them under the corners.  Look at the above picture: take one screwdriver and put it to the left of where he has the big screwdriver, with the handle pointing towards the bottom right of the pic. take the other and put it to the left with the handle pointing bottom left of the pic.  You'll notice that they form a cross one atop the other.  Now gently pry the clamp up with the 1st screw driver then take the 2nd and pry up using the first screwdriver as leverage.  My brother and I do it this way and it works like a charm.  Good Luck.

I followed this tutorial about 2 months ago with my own xbox, and while i had my doubts, i was able to fix my own xbox.. i added the nylon washers as a 'just in case' method, and the only problem i had was the tightening of the 8 machine screws to get the heat sinks properly placed.

But what i did is tightened everything to a reasonable 'same' fit ( i did not have a torque wrench) and loosened every screw 1/4 of a turn until i found the right torque for the heat sink screws.  only took me 45 mins, and to this date, haven't had a problem with mine! works out perfectly for MW2 coming out in a day or so haha

What do i do with the x-Clamps ?

I used #8 Metal flat washers. After I took the Xbox apart, I removed the X clamps and heatsinks. Removie the old thermal paste as good as possible and apply a new layer of thermal paste or gel instead. Be very careful. cover the entire chip but do not cover the little metal parts around it. After you are done applying the new thermal paste, put back one heat sinks. On the opposite side of the motherboard, where the X clamps are, put one washer on each end of the heat sink. So total is 4 washers. After that you attach the X clamps back. Then do the same process with the second heat sink. Leave the xbox off over night to make sure everything is dried up properly. Turn on your xbox the next day and it should be back to life. I have used mine for a few days now, on average 6 to 8 hours straight with no issues what so ever. Good luck.

ok boys and girls this guide is awsome. Here the thing though, you do not need to go though ALL that trouble. Here is what I did. I took the xbox apart, then cleaned the cpu and gpu from the old thermal gel. Then I used new thermal gel. The key is to make the heat sinks really tight. So i got washers and put them on the bottom part of the motherboard. So the washers are on the side where you put those X shapped brackes. Then I Put back the X shapped brackets over the washers and voila, done. It works perfectly now. Its been two days. Crosses fingers. If you have Questions email me at ramez_12@hotmail.com

tried the method shown here and the needle nose pliers, both were requiring more force than i was comfortable with, tried this:

and they came right off.

CAUTION!! be sure to twist when you remove the heatsinks. when working on PC's anyway, you can easily remove the CPU with the heatsink, be careful

these are soldered to the board, so that they cannot be removed that easily. I would be more concerned about bending the board and unintentionally breaking the wire traces then removing a chip with hundreds of solder points :)

I'm sorry, but i was performing this step and the screwdriver slipped and broke of a piece of the circuit board. I'm now legitimately pissed off about my 300+ dollar product getting flushed down the crapper.

I used a 2mm flat head (mini-flathead) to get in between the X-clamp and the screw, then I gently rocked it back and forth till it popped out, then did 2 more sides and like Dr. Prof said, it popped right out. Just be careful when prying it, not to use too much force, lest you break the mobo!

Use Needle Nose Pliers. It took me less than 2 minutes. It was way easier
