this probably sounds stupid, but if the batteries run out, would you have to take out the top tube? But isn't the top tube already stuck by tape? Or would it just be easier to make a new one?

Well it takes some time to clean them, but if you get the right ones, they are big enough for an AA battery and a joule thief circuit. I could post some pics of mine, if you want ( at the moment I don't have any photos of it ).
