Introduction: Flexing Sensor Bow Tie

Instructable on how to create a moving bow tie using a flexing sensor and arduino

Step 1: Gathering Materials

Materials needed:

Step 2: Flex Sensor Coding

Step 3: Breadboarding

Step 4: BreadBoard to PerfBoard

  • Using A Perfboard would provide a way to permanently connect your circuit
  • Perfboard

    • a material for prototyping electronic circuits

    • creating ones own circuit board

      • Video on going from Breadboard to Perfboard

      • Link to understanding going from breadboard to perfboard
        • https://startingelectronics.org/beginners/start-el...

        • Please read in case you plan to use a perfboard that does not resemble a breadboard exactly. Just as I did, in the images shown above.
          • advantage of using the perfboard shown in the images, is that one can place everything closer together to have a smaller board

Step 5: Completed Connection/Circuit

Step 6: Constructing a Bow Tie

Step 7: Attatching Bow Tie to Servo

Using needle and thread, stitch the wings of the servo into the bow tie

Step 8:

For the part of the tie that wraps around the neck, make it a bit more sturdier by wrapping wire around it

Step 9:

  • As a way to conceal the battery, arduino, and perfboard, I used the remainder of the to attach a box to the end of the tie.
  • Wrap the wire around the box until it is fully attached.
    • Of course this isnt the most visually pleasing aspect of my piece, so I highly encourage other ideas in terms concealing the battery, arduino, and perfboard.

Step 10:

  • Conceal the wire by stitching more fabric over it

Step 11:

  • Stitch buttons to tie as well to place into wire hooks that are taped to the box

Step 12:

  • Wire and flexing sensor are feed down through shirt to hand. I learned
during critique it is best to have the sensor secured to a part of the body that flexes..

Step 13: Basic Sketch of What It Should Look Like

Step 14: Final Product

That is cool. I need to make a bow tie like this for my Bill Nye costume.
