This is a bag I made from floppy disks. I found scads of floppy disks in a dumpster and wanted to make plate mail armor out of it (that is my next floppy project) I found out that a bag would be a great proof of concept project. Here goes...

Hi there,

I have ca. 50 new floppy disks I don't know how to get rid of. I can send them to you for free if you can cover the postage and if you are still interested of course.

yaaahhh!!!...I wish I can have a bag like that...
shaawn says: Sep 6, 2010. 6:08 AM
Very nice! You can just put a sleeve into the bag, a lining of some kind. That would keep things from falling through the joins. You can use different materials for different functions, colours, textures. eg: a plastic bag insert - for sweaty sports- wear or frozen foods. Different colours - to match occasions, a padded liner for a laptop...
imanalchemist (author) in reply to shaawnSep 6, 2010. 11:37 AM
take a look at the next installment of floppy disk bags, it comes canvas lined for just that reason.

Very creative way to reuse useless floppy disks! i'll be keeping my eye out for floppy disks the next time i go out now, they definitely make better bags than coasters!

A thought. The stainless steel jump rings seem like they could add up to an substantial total given the quantity you need ( four per disk). Fishing and support ing goods stores (e. g. Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain, Sports Authority, Dick's etc.) have small "split rings" (like those used for keys) which are used for fishing tackle.

They usually sell in paks of 5 or 10 for a little more than what one jump ring seems to cost. If true stainless steel is not available, some fishing ones are labeled as "English stainless" which is actually some kind of plating on either steel or brass, but seems to resist corrosion fairly well. It seems like these would be easy to install as compared to having to bend open and then bend closed the split rings, as long as you buy relatively thin split rings. If opening the split rings is difficult for you (as for me, having lost some feeling in my finger tips as I get old and decrepit), you will find very near the split rings in the sporting goods store a tool called a "split ring pliers" (for about $10). The pliers make opening them simple.

a couple of quick questions!!! Where exactly did you find these "links?" ALSO, could you PLEASE put up how to put on the strap?! I'm planning on making one for Christmas, and I would love to see how you did it! Thanks!
janettetsmith in reply to pleasesmileSep 5, 2010. 2:41 PM
I make jewelry and we call them 'jump rings'. You can buy them online in a variety of metals from gold and sterling (I would reserve these two for my couture version of the bag) to base metals. The base metal ones are very inexpensive and they are already made for you. :)

Here's a couple:

copper

stainless steel

Also ... open the rings from side to side instead of top to bottom to keep from weakening them.
shilpi29 says: Jun 30, 2010. 2:47 AM
I really liked this idea, but frankly speaking it has become very common now.. can anyone suggest me ideas other than bag and Pen stand ? i have so many floppy disks lying and wanna doing something really different. Thanks
Dragonbone in reply to shilpi29Sep 5, 2010. 2:45 PM
The ones with a full circle of liner make good coasters when split in two - saves a lot of coffee rings on the furniture (at work, we make tea in a mug with a teabag - when you squeeze the teabag with a spoon to take it out, it often squirts down the side of the mug, so these blotting-paper coasters are great). Cheap floppies only have a titchy bit of liner though.
heacoxr says: Sep 5, 2010. 11:53 AM
Now you have a bag with over 40mb of storage.
aunt margie says: Aug 27, 2010. 9:41 PM
I just have some questions. Since people mention canvas liners or towels being attached to the disks, what value are the disks adding to the item? Is it only decorative or do they somehow add to the functionality? It's a lot easier to make a bag just from canvas. The kind of reuse I think of for recycling things is a use that needs some quality that the thing has. The only way I've used floppy disks so far is to hot-glue four of them together in a stack for use as a weight at the end of a thick cord. They already have a hole big enough for the cord, and enough weight to keep the cord in place when it is stretched between two railings. They have enough color to be attractive and they are not sharp or heavy enough to be dangerous like a chunk of junk metal. Not that I don't think the bags are cute -- but is that the only reason to use the floppies?
todddiskin says: Mar 26, 2010. 10:02 AM

I'm still making mine, but in my Robotics club at school, we had a ton of small zip ties laying around that we didn't need, so I asked if I could have them. They work great as connectors! I'm using braided monitor power cords as straps, but only because I can't find any long enough IDE cables. I plan on using mine the entire next school year. I have tons of floppies for repairs.
scottamus says: Apr 24, 2007. 1:28 PM
Your straps need to be flat IDE cables! I must have 3 dozen of those useless things.

This looks really neat! I have a bunch of floppy disks that are going bad, the ones that don't read or write anymore I don't have any use for, so I just pile them up. I might build one of these (though I'd probably use cable ties instead of chain links, since I already have a bunch of those) once I accumulate enough dead disks. I still use working ones for small files.

Any ideas? I'm in New Jersey and would love to find some local people interested in this idea.

Hey, this is semi-related, cos I love this idea. Does anyone know if we can bookmark instructables we like and have the bookmark list in our account page? That way I can keep track of good ideas without necessarily needing to print out each one straight away, and I don't need to clog up by browser's bookmark list with a thousand random things I like. I tried finding this answer in the site generally but couldn't.. Thanks for anybody's help. Also, I was thinking you could make a tote bag version of this, without the flap, and two handles coming out of the top. Not sure about materials or fastening yet, but it would look cool. And hence, if one made smaller versions as handbags, things like weight etc wouldn't be as big as a concern as in utility bags. Anyhoo..

Anyways, I made my first one and lined the inside with tape. It worked fine but stinks. I couldn't get the right chains and finally settled with sewing all the diskettes onto a t-shirt, cutting it out and sewing it into a bag. I finished it by adding buttons on the inside to hold my guitar strap. My only regret is making all the holes with a nail and hammer. Thanks again!

if you open these up there is a circular metalic-plastic disc inside. it is allmost impossable to break. i bet if your links went through that it would be stronger. like if the links were in the middle of the side, and set back a centimeter or 2 instead of the corners. you may also have to close up the corners too so that stuff doesnt fall out.

why do your bags always look so uncomfortable? maybe because you're going for geek chic over functionality.
imanalchemist (author) in reply to drabApr 5, 2007. 12:50 AM
I guess you just have to try them. There is obviously no way I can assure you that they are not uncomfortable; There is no visible padding and they are made of hard materials and therefore must surely be heavy. Yes I do go for geek chic, but why add unnecessary, awkward padding when your body already has the necessary padding on your back and hip? Skeletor may not find this comfortable, but Skeletor is not my target audience.
Hepheastus says: Apr 4, 2007. 10:59 AM
Here are my images to push negative nancy down a bit. I made the front flap of mine show the front side of the floppies so I could use the little stickers, giving it a little variety. Didn't have any other colored floppies than black, sadly. I'm getting a strap later and I realized just now the original one had it's side floppies on their side, which mine are straight up, so I'll have to fasten the strap hooks a little more down, but that shouldn't be that big of a problem.

Cable ties are looking like a much better idea and that is something that all of us should have lying around. Great Instructable

i need one more floppy and i can make one of those to keep my gum in.
jomodv says: Feb 24, 2007. 6:29 PM
Well, it's kind of original. My gf made something very similar roughly six months ago. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not claiming you stole the idea from someone. The only difference was that the disks were held together with clear duct tape. Advantages: 1. Waterproof 2. No holes to drill 3. Holds its shape 4. You can easily make a strap with duct tape. Disadvantages: Not only is it waterproof, but it will hold water (although I hope you won't be filling your floppy disk bag w/ water). In any case, floppies are a dying technology, and this is a great way to recycle them.

I finished the bag at the end of august 2006 roughly six months ago as well... crazy. thanks for the suggestions however: I love how well this has been recieved and I hope further projects will win you guys over as well. Hard to follow this up though.
jackrackam says: Feb 8, 2007. 9:19 PM
You could also recycle a couch cusion and fit it to the inside, sew it to the corners and you would have a cool clean protection for putting stuff in there that you don't want scratched or scufffed from the floppies. I'm thinking with some re-inforcement it would make a great laptop bag. I'll consider adding pockets.
metapherein says: Jan 22, 2007. 11:28 PM
This is a fantastic project! Has anyone tried any of the following: (1) Using only four holes (the two pre-existing ones and the two pre-marked ones) to attach the disks together horizontally and vertically? Regardless, what effect do you think that would have on the overall structure of the bag? (2) Using some sort of backing material to help hold the whole thing together better? I was thinking maybe a huge piece of canvas cut in the shape of matrix and then attached to the disks with the rings might help.

I just made mine, I substituted leather for the metal rings and made some duct tape pockets inside. For the strap I used an old guitar strap hot glued to the sides. You can't see many of the interior details in the picture but you can (sort of) see the leather ties used for the fasteners. THANK YOU FOR THIS INSTRUCTABLE SOO MUCH!!!

How did the leather ties work out? Is your bag sturdy?

Hey. what is the blue disk used for? I finished my bag, its amazing! I'll post pics later.

This bag is so cool. I am going to start making one, and was wondering if it will hold a laptop. I noticed you said there was some type of reinforcement needed. I can't wait to start mine!!

imanalchemist (author) in reply to JohnnyTreeHuggerDec 26, 2006. 4:57 PM
No not at all. Considering its size you can't make it weigh that much; Unless, of course, you filled it with say, pollonium

yea, im gonna make of these into a protective case for my xbox 360

That is an uber cool bag and a neat idea! I've decided to make one for my boyfriend for Christmas and was wondering what gauge wire you used for the links? cheers.
crestind says: Nov 22, 2006. 5:23 PM
Awesome! Saved 46 floppies from death in a landfill. Works well as a laptop case once you add some padding inside.
Hsquared says: Nov 17, 2006. 9:22 PM
This is a cool project. Does anyone know how many floppy disks you need for this project (I think its 46 but it might be 50)?
monkifrogy57 says: Nov 11, 2006. 9:33 AM
I'm making one for myself and one for my brother. He's in college as a computer science major. He loves this kind of stuff. So is there supposed to be 3 rows for the flap of 2?

All you need to go with that bag is a Utilikilt. www.utilikilt.com The tool one would look good, so would the tux.
Andrew546 says: Sep 24, 2006. 10:06 PM
Yoiu should use an old ribbon cable as the strap. :-)

runninutes says: Oct 20, 2006. 10:25 PM
imanalchemist, can you tell us more specifically what you used for the links? I found some 10mm silver jump rings at the craft store, but they look too flimsy to me. Yours look sturdier.
vfontanela says: Oct 16, 2006. 10:28 PM
I did it!!!!! Wow, mine doesn't look as well as your does, but anyways, it rocks! It's still missing the straps, but I'll get it ok tomorrow, then I'll post a pic here. Mine is a black one. Thank you, imanalchemist!

that was my origional plan, but finding three or four feet of SCSI ribbon cable is really hard to find
zachninme in reply to imanalchemistSep 30, 2006. 5:14 PM
Well, if you did only 2 pieces together, that would be like 3 dual-bus IDE cables, close enough!
fullmetalmonkey in reply to imanalchemistSep 25, 2006. 4:33 PM
Dang! I just through out about 10 feet of old IDE cables last week! They would've made perfect straps.
imanalchemist (author) says: Sep 26, 2006. 7:21 PM
I didn't need to take the lables off because this side of the floppy is mor beautiful anyway... yeah try to find that link
Kelani says: Sep 26, 2006. 12:03 PM
I saw a few weeks ago where some chick (incredibly cute, btw) made a sort of armor-plate skirt out of unlabelled, black floppies. She used dabs of plastic epoxy to join the disks that didn't need to move, and tiny 2-way screw-down claw hinges to do the rest. Damn, where was that link?
sdamy says: Sep 26, 2006. 2:34 AM
very cooooool! :-)
tomble says: Sep 24, 2006. 7:20 PM
Nice work, Anal Chemist! Now I have something to do with all those floppies I've got laying about at home. Can't wait to see the suit of armour, are you considering using the round disc parts themselves to make a sort of dragonscale effect?
Cheyyne in reply to tombleSep 25, 2006. 12:42 PM
I think it's "I'm an alchemist," but I'll leave that for the poster to rectify (rectum-fy?)

good work cheyyne, you'll make detective someday
biff.the.black says: Sep 25, 2006. 6:30 PM
man i wish i hadent smashed all those floppies a few weeks ago!
i'll find some somehow and use duct tape to hold it all together.
i like the fact that the people in the picture have long hair _ i also am a guy with long hair!

good job!
poloace says: Sep 25, 2006. 6:47 AM
is the picture posted of the layout above the final bag??? doesn't make sense to me- wouldn't one side be 3 high, and the other 5 (one to fold over, and one to fold back down the bag to make the cover)??? your pic shows that you used 6 floppies for one of the sides... am i mistaken?
imanalchemist (author) in reply to poloaceSep 25, 2006. 9:08 AM
Oh wow! good catch. That is actually a picture of the matrix before I had to reassemble it due to an unexpected disassembly, and apparently omit one layer of disks. I didn'e even catch that during production
poloace in reply to imanalchemistSep 25, 2006. 3:12 PM
i still like it, and i'm going to make one when i have time. solid.

cool pack. on an interesting side note why are your toenails painted?
dietcoke in reply to Jack DanielsSep 25, 2006. 9:22 AM
My guess is the toe nails are painted because imanalchemist wanted them to be painted. I'm as much of a guy as a guy can get and keep mine painted, simply because I like it. aamof, my wife just did mine last night. back on topic.... I love that bag! I would buy one of those. Very creative.....

mikesty says: Sep 24, 2006. 9:33 PM
That's pretty sweet and weird. I was thinking that a layer or two of floppies would make a nice vest ;)
imanalchemist (author) says: Sep 24, 2006. 7:55 PM
I would only use those for a decorative effect, it would be too soft of an armor otherwise
TheCheese9921 says: Sep 24, 2006. 6:40 PM
