Introduction: Fluffy Monster Case

In this Instructable i'll show you how to make a simple case for a small (or big!) precious object, with a sleepy monster face on. This makes a great iPhone or camera case, and a very easy to personalise gift for a loved one :)

You can make it out of any fabric but i recommend something thick-ish (to protect against bumps) and non-stretchy

Step 1: You Will Need

Picture of You Will Need

a) Polar fleece
b) Fur fabric

c) Black and white felt
d) Velcro
e) Pins
f) Thread
g Scissors

Step 2: Cut Your Fabric Out

Picture of Cut Your Fabric Out

1) Place your phone onto your fleece fabric, as far away from the edge as the phone is thick, and mark this distance again underneath the phone.

2) Mark this same distance all along the fabric, and cut along the line, making a long strip.

3) Place your phone onto the strip of fabric with enough overhang on one side to wrap all the way over it.

4) Mark this same distance on the opposite side of the phone and cut out. You should now have a rectangle of fabric that can comfortably encapsulate the phone, with enough for a flap to come back down over the front.

5) Place the fleece onto the reverse side of your fur fabric noting the direction of the fur. Cut out the fur to the same size as the fleece.

6) This is what you should have so far, a piece of fleece and a piece of fur the same size

Step 3: Sew the Ends Together

Picture of Sew the Ends Together

7) Now you need to work out what part will be the main case and what part will be the flap. Pin the fabric together, right sides in, at each corner, and fold the fabric over the phone with about 5mm extra (to account for the seam) marking where it lands.

8) Leaving a 4mm margin on the 'flap' end, sew around the three edges to the marks you made. On the other end just sew straight across the end.

9) Tip: Trim the corners off at 45 degrees, this will give sharper points once you turn it right-way-out.

10) Turn the case the right-way-out, it will look like this.

Step 4: Sew It Up and Add the Velcro

Picture of Sew It Up and Add the Velcro

11) Take the edge where you only sewed straight across and fold it to meet where the base of the flap end. Pin in place on both sides.

12) Leaving a 4mm hem sew along this edge with a straight stitch, finish the edges with a zigzag stitch.

13) Cut a piece of velcro about 1cm shorter than the edge of the case, sew the rough side of the velcro onto the lining side of the flap, 5mm away from the edge.

14) Tip: To get the fluffy fibers out of the stitches  on the front of the case run an un-picker or knitting needle (don't use anything sharp or you'll tear the fur) horizontally along the edge.

15) Put the phone into the case and close the flap, mark the case with a pin where it comes down to.

16) Pin the soft piece of velcro onto the case about 5mm above the marker pin you just placed. Sew the velcro in place

Step 5: Making the Monster Face

Picture of Making the Monster Face

17) Take your white felt, place it just underneath the end of the case flap and mark some sharp teeth on it. Cut out being careful to trim away any pen lines.

18) Trim the teeth to fit just underneath the velcro, pin into place. Handsew along the long edge using small neat stitches.

19) Cut two semi circles shapes from black felt and sew on using neat zig zag stitches.

I'm gonna have to make one of these!

YellowBlu Co. (author)2012-07-04

Wow this looks amazing!!!!! I wanted to make one.. unfortunately I don't have ANY of the materials aside from scissors. Fortunately, I'm handy with duct tape, so I decided to make my own version out of duct tape. I made it for my sister's birthday, which is today! So... thanks for the inspiration!

Dusk Shadows (author)2012-04-12

JessieT (author)2010-12-30

I love this - definately gonna make one. Maybe with pink fur?!

A-Violent-Shock (author)2010-08-25

I have two questions. would it get really it get really dirty if it was a pencil case? can you wash it? How can you use that design to cover a regular zipper case? Thanks :]

Valeil (author)A-Violent-Shock2010-10-09

You could probably make a pencil bag by getting rid of the flap, and putting a zipper on.

Valeil (author)2010-10-09

This is so cool! I think I might do this for my laptop(: Except probably more fleece in place of the fur, because, you know, fur isn't that manly :P

comsa42 (author)2010-09-06

Very nice instructable! I'm going to do the same but for the ipod touch 4g, with the window for the screen and everything! I'll post an instructables when im done :D

Kahpow (author)2010-08-08

LOVELOVELOVE <3 I'm going to make a pencil case :D But just wondering where you get the polar fleece?

bleach815 (author)2010-05-15

i dont get it, do u flip inside out the whole thing, so u sew the whole way around except for a small space, or do u only flip the flap?

You are leaving one section open so you can flip the who thing right side out. Then sewing it shut with a straight stitch.

aflacpyro267 (author)2010-06-29

that is brilliant!! i think i will make my own!!

lakramer (author)2010-06-26

Oh wow, so adorable! I'm definitely going to make this. Great instructable!

Thank you for posting this! I made my own out of black fur, using white felt for the eyes. Anyone have any ideas for the rest of the furry fabric?

Phsycoduckie (author)2010-02-02

floryzzz (author)2010-02-01

swtasapup (author)2010-01-28

OMG!!! I love it! It is so adorable. I would love to make it.

motadacruz (author)2010-01-26

I'm not really into needles and thread... but that looks amazing!!
Really great idea and looks so awesome!! Good instructions!

whiteoakart (author)motadacruz2010-01-28

You can do it with hot melt glue, instead of needle and thread. It holds up great on fleece.  The seam lines won't be as nice and straight, but what the heck, it's a monster.

Mr.Ownage (author)2010-01-26

I'm totaly making a pencil case outta that

Very Interesting (author)2010-01-26

Cute! Cute! Cute!

Nikki213 (author)2010-01-26

Doctor What (author)2010-01-26
