Introduction: Fold-over Sandwich or Snack Bag

About: I've been a market gardener for 17 years now. Besides growing flowers for flower bouquets & veggies for my family, I enjoy crafts. One of my favorite is sun printing. I sell on etsy too under WildcreekGardens.

Here's a nice reusable alternative to plastic bags for your lunch. It's waterproof on the inside.  You can wipe clean or stick it in the wash.

Step 1: Supplies

  • Fabric – one decorative piece for the outside and one nylon “windbreaker” type piece
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine, Scissors, ruler

Step 2: Cut Fabric

Cut both pieces of fabric pieces 8-9” x 16”.  I find using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat is easiest but you could also measure it out with a pencil and ruler.

Step 3: Begin Sewing

Put the right sides together and sew a 1/2” seam starting at a long side and ending leaving a 2-3” opening at the top. Trim the corners and turn right side out.

Step 4: Top Seam

Fold in the opening and top sew all the way across the top to close the opening.  You could slip-stitch the opening closed but quickness is a priority with me over neatness.

Step 5:

Fold down one end 2” showing the nylon fabric. Fold up the rest of the fabric so that the bottom meets the top of the folded down part. Pin sides. The outside will be showing.

Step 6: Finish

Sew 3/8” seam on both sides.  Note that this is sewing the folded down part too.

Step 7:

That's it! Insert your sandwich and fold over the top just like you would the plastic bags.
