the most obvious thing to do would be to right thing on the physic paper then shine the UV light on them, this can also be done with most highlighter pens

haha great idea. Reminds me of a time once when i was getting onto a bus and the guy in front of me stared blankly at the driver for a while, and then proceeded to remove his shoe and hit against the reader, sure enough it beeped.
Everyone on the bus was slightly uncomfortable around him for the remainder of their journey.

There is one. You can twist it, shake it etc. and it can be programmed with up to 13 remote codes.

It also is a good way to recharge glow in the dark items. My favorites are the glowing planets and stars that you get from the stores, or large sheets of it and making designs. I have also been known to say "Just let me get my sonic screwdriver." when I have a customer ask for something impossible on a computer. Sadly, they think this is a real solution.

There is a way for it to open doors... it would be destructive though, something the SS never sported. I am talking about inserting a blue laser diode instead of the black light LED, then it can open certain locks. Simple locks, cheap locks, but still :P

Sorry, i'm really interested in building some sort of practical sonic screwdriver, and this sounds really interesting but I've only started learning about electronics. Would it be simple enough to take a Toy sonic screwdriver and insert this blue laser diode, or would it be better to build something from scratch? Any help would be much appreciated?

There is an instructible on how to make a blue burning laser, which I had in mind. Search away!

It has enough UV to be able to use it at close range to detect rubies.  And other mineral specimens that will fluoresce in UV light, but I think rubies are particularly cool.  They glow a sort of odd pink when UV light hits them.  For best results, try it with the light on the sonic screwdriver within an inch or so of the specimen in a dimly lit place.

So there's a fun use that's sorta science oriented and even practical.  How much more practical can you get than avoiding passing up perfectly good raw rubies thinking they're just common pebbles?

I actually have found a few raw rubies in driveway gravel, for example.
