Take a few initial measurements that you can bring to the door dealer with you. First measure the garage opening, both height and width. This is simply the entire garage door frame size, the area the door will cover. Next measure sideroom, which is the area of wall inside the garage opening on the left and right. Typically at least three inches is needed on each side to mount the side door tracks. Finally measure the headroom, which is the area from the ceiling to the top of the opening. Since the overhead track and motor are mounted on the ceiling you'll want at least 10 inches of clearance here.
