Garden Rain Barrels

There are endless reasons for gardening and people in almost every setting are planting all manor of growing things. With water being as precious a commodity as it is these days and global citizens becoming more and more conservation minded we are seeing ever increasing amounts of green projects like garden rain barrels. This guide will show you some of the inventive ways people are approaching the need to water those thirsty plants without driving up their water bill or depleting valuable natural resources.

We have a fairly simple design; I'd love to expand it someday to something a little more convenient/high tech!

Whiskey barrels are great rain catchers, but were not really designed to be standing up. They were created to be lying down; as such, design a rain-catcher system that employs prone barrels.

Sure - oak whiskey barrels are happy standing up if they are full of liquid ALL THE TIME. They won't be; there will be long periods when the barrels are empty (unless you live in Kauai I guess), which will dry the staves and generally lead to entropy. My next design will use prone barrels, which is cooler to look at anyway...

Depending on where you live, make sure the barrel or other container is enclosed, for 2 reasons: 1. Mosquitoes love standing water for breeding 2. Some cities/counties prohibit standing water, usually for reason #1
