Introduction: Garrys Mod Projects: How to Download Addons, How to Install Basic Addons, How to Make a Catapult

About: I like mountain biking, its my main sport and i own 2 bikes so anything to do with bikes interests me, i also used to make K'nex guns but have since retired...to making instructables about games and other thin…

Just as i have promised...i have now started on a new collection of garrys mod projects that you can make, all set out in groups of 3...i will continue to make them and it would help if you could give me feedback on how they are put together as it would help me improve....of course the first few wont be perfect but they will get better...so without anymore talkings, lets get started!

Step 1: Installing Basic Addons...

This is a question,i or any other garrys mod user has been asked many many times, by people who have just started and dont know much about how gmod works...well i am here to show you how to install the basic, but most crucial addons.
i will be using the phx full final pack as an example.

Step 2: Obtain Winrar

To start off with...you will need winrar, winrar is a powerful program which unzips files...in our case we will use it to unzip addons. To get winrar....just visit http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10007677.html then cick download...dont worry, it is free.

Step 3: The Basic But Crucial Addons...

Now for the addons you can get the addons from www.garrysmod.org they are all free and you dont need to buy them...i wont go into too much detail about how to install complicated files...but i will show how to install the basic but most needed ones, the most needed ones in my opinion are the pheonix storms premium models pack...as they open up loads more materials to create things with.

When you first go onto garrysmod.org you will notice a big square filled with lots of different words, these are tags and you can just click on one and it will take you to all the files associated with that word...this saves time typing :) there is also a search box where you can search for addons.

Just below the tag box, there are two columns, one labeled latest....and one labeled popular
these show the latest addons people have added to garrysmod.org and the most popular (most downloaded) addons...these are helpful because you instantly know what new addons have been added to the site.

To download an addon, just click on the addon you want from the list...and then click the download box.

Step 4: Downloading the Addon

Now that you have found the addon that you want to download, just click the big box that says download on it, then the download will start, the phx final pack will take about 15mins to download because it is quite large whereas a smaller file such as a few models will take about 2mins to download.

Step 5: Installing the Addon...

Now that the download has finished (phx full final in our case) you need to click ok, and then the file you have downloaded should open in winrar...if it doesnt...you have problems.

After it has opened in winrar, there are 2 ways you can install the addon, you can use winrar to extract the addon to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\\garrysmod\garrysmod\addonsn then click ok and leave it until it has finished extracting OR you can extract the files onto the desktop then follow then manually go to the addons folder by going from garrys mod to steamapps then youre name then garrysmod garrysmod again then addons. i prefur doing ir manually as extracting it doesnt always work for me.

A tip is when you are installing a load of addons is to keep the addon folder open...so you can put them onto youre desktop, then cut them all into the folder with ease.

After you have placed the addon it should appear in gameplay...remember extracting addons into the addons folder only works with basic addons...like vehicles packs and materials packs.

Step 6: The Basic Catapult

This is a GREAT small project for any people who have just started playing gmod, and it shows off some of the things gmod can do...like putting different props together to make them work, and this is also the most effective type of catapult i have found out so far, that causes the least lag and uses fewest props...although i did make a massive trebuchet once which later spazzed out, so without any further talking...here is the catapult!

Tools we will be using...
Physics gun
Weld tool
Easy weld tool
Axis tool
Rope tool
Prop spawner tool (optional)
No collide tool (optional)

Step 7: Build the Base and Arm...

To start off with you need a flat piece of ground...the easiest place to build is in the middle of flatgrass, then spawn a shipping container and weld or freeze it to the ground, then spawn a beam and axis that to the side of the container.

Step 8: Attach the Arm to the Box...

Spawn a small box, and then easy weld it to the end of the arm of the catapult, then lift the arm up and add thrusters to its base until you can make the arm fly up fast, after you have done that, position the arm at a near 90 degree angle...just a little bit off so that the arm will fall back down on the thruster side when you let go of it.

Step 9: Add the Rope and You Are Done :)

Now all you need to do is add the rope from the arm of the catapult to the floor, this will make the catapult suddenly stop, launching the projectile through the air :)

Step 10: The Prop Spawner Step (optional)

This isnt needed but it makes the catapult easier and quicker to fire. first get a projectile of your choice and place it squarley over the top of the box of the catapult, once you have done this freeze it in place.

Then use the prop spawner tool to make it spawn props into the box and choose a key to make the props spawn, then after you have done that get the no collide tool and right click to make it no collide with everything, then your catapult is ready to fire!

Step 11: End Notes

Yeah...so if you have enjoyed this gmod instructable i will make more...and dont hesitate to give me constructive critisism or ideas on what to make next...i hope you have enjoyed this rather long instructable
