Get a STRONGER Brew from your My Kcup

I love my Keurig Coffee Maker and if you are like me you probably enjoy experimenting with other non prepackaged coffee blends that aren't available in KCup form. That is where the "My KCup" accessory comes into play. For those unfamiliar, it allows one to brew a cup of their favorite coffee blends without needing to buy them in KCup form (if they are even available). Unfortunately the My KCup in my opinion brews a rather weak cup of coffee compared to it's pre-manufactured counterpart. Rest easy! I have found a fix that doesn't cost a dime! All you need is a "USED" KCup. Follow along. I have photos attached in order to make it easier to follow.

A good K-cup to use is a hot chocolate one, because there aren't any grounds in them after the brewing process. That way you shouldn't have much to clean out of the inside.

Great Tip! There are a few different brands and flavors that are like that without even a filter I believe.

Okay, so I have tried several methods of getting a stronger cup of coffee. Some I read here and some I've read other places. So far, my best experiment has been this: grind my favorite starbucks coffee in my coffee grinder making it a fine grind, reuse a k-cup after rinsing it out (the filter stays in). Pack the coffee tight into the K-cup then use a small double round of foil over top and sealed around edge. Brew and enjoy.... much better.

I am probably being too cynical but I wonder if the engineers knew how to get a stronger brew but got trumped by the marketers or top management. After all, if we users can't get a good tasting brew from the provided KCup method what do we do; we go back to the (high profit) cartridges offered by Keurig. Hmmmm

Great solution - and it doesn't cost a cent!!

@ notsodopey I see your point but I disagree. I believe it is poor design on the part of Keurig R&D. I think most of us here would simply leave the keurig if we couldn't get a satisfying cup of joe at a fair price.
In fact, the tip about lowering the gasket is something that shouldn't and wouldn't be necessary if Keurig gave a crap about it's target market.

Yup. Exactly what I was thinking!!!

My wife and I love our Keurigs. Se has ordered the new and improved My K-Cup which is supposed to address the weaker brew issue but I'll be keeping this Instructable in my back pocket in case it's just hype.

Thanks for this clever and easy tip! I've also been unsatisfied with the weak coffee from our Keurig. One time saver tip I can add: Not all K-cup containers are the same dimensions. The first used K-cup I cut was from a Twinings tea and discovered that the bottom of the tea container is more narrow than K-cup containers for coffee. The tea containers are too narrow at the bottom and don't allow the mesh filter to fit all the way inside. I took a glance at the other K-cups that we have right now and it seems that all of the tea containers are more narrow while coffee and hot chocolate are a bit wider. I hope that will save someone else some time and confusion. Thanks again!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I'm drinking a cup of my own coffee now after retrofitting the K-Cup. I was ready to pull out my 12 cupper because of the frustration of seeming to be forced to use pre-filled cups. My coffee was so weak I couldn't even taste it! My coffee is now about 3 times stronger and delicious again! :)

Love this! I was really frustrated with brewing my own grinds! This works just right. Thanks

Found a neat product from mellita, called javajig. Found it at Walmart. Works much better than the k cup and comes with the filters.

I purchased a Keurig B31 Mini plus coffee maker, so i could brew Starbucks coffee, since Kraft [owners of Tassimo coffee makers], and Starbucks parted company.

I immediately noticed that the Keurig makes a noticeably weaker cup of coffee, because it just dumps hot water into the k-cup. [ The Tassimo design coffee disc forces the water through metered orifices in the disc for more complete saturation of the grounds].
After making two cups of coffee i opened the k-cup and noticed that the water makes a water hole straight through instead of being disributed through the entire surface of all the coffee grounds inside the cup. I like your idea and will keep it in mind. For now i am using Disposa K-cups with 2 paper filters instead of just one, in order to restrict the flow of liquid in an attempt to get more satuaration of the coffee inside the k-cup.Also it allows me to prefill 50 cups so i dont need to bother with messy grounds on a daily basis.
If im not satisfied with that, then i will attempt to use your idea. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for the great idea on how to create a stronger coffee!
I like to prepare the little paper cups ahead of time, then use as I need them. I found the miniature muffin pans hold the little paper cups filled with coffee real well, for now stored in a covered 9x13 baking pan.

Thank you so much. I'm amazed that people will take the time to teach these things. On verge of sending back coffee-maker, but now will try this.

STRONGER AND EASIER CLEANING Here is hoe I achieved stronger coffee. Buy the paper filters for the keurig. 50 for 4.99 ez fill. Tear the paper flap cover off the filter. Place in yor my cup reusable strainer. Fill with coffee - fine ground. Use as you would in the my cup holder. The paper filter allows you to add a bit more coffee but more importantly slows the brewing process because the coffee steeps a bit longer. Similar to pre infusion. I roast my own beans so aim very particular and tried all sorts of filter combos this works best for mt taste which is strong coffee but not a dark roast To lclead just pop the paper filter out and discard much like a traditional drip filter

I have a top of the line Keurig, worse coffee with the my k-cup I have ever tasted. I have been drinking instant, today went to McDonalds at 0600 am.after trying 6 times to make a decent cup with Starbucks coffee I ground myself.
I am trying this and if it doesn't work....this thing is going in the trash and I am going to go buy a new Cuisinart!!

Thank you so much for this instructable. Such a simple addition to My Kcup has made my own grind a great cup of coffee. I was so impressed, I set up an account just to give you this comment!

BRAVO, Sir! Just inherited a B79, and this has made a world of difference! I may try fabricating a basket with a gasket up top and single hole in the base - until then, this is the best & easiest solution I've found!!!
BELLACANISLUPUS says: Apr 5, 2012. 1:38 PM
One more tip: If you decide to purchase coffee from your local coffee shop or store in whole bean form and you have them grind them for you, ask them to Grind them on Automactic Drip. You will still need to take them home and Grind them in your blender on Grind according to the inforamtion I gave you below, but the process will be started for you.
BELLACANISLUPUS says: Apr 5, 2012. 1:09 PM
I have purchased my first Keurig coffee maker and I love it! But who can really afford to buy the K-Cups. Like most of you I love to have different flavors of coffee at my finger tips, but at what cost? So instead I have purchased my favorite coffee in the largest can I can find and started making my own K-Cups with My K-Cup filter. Believe it or not it IS NOT THE K-CUP that makes a great cup of coffee, IT IS THE GRIND OF THE COFFEE. Surprised? Well I wasn't. I guess you could say I am a coffee connoisseur! I have been drinking coffee since I was 6 years old.

What I have figured out and now apply to making my own K-Cups is, how they grind the coffee in the K-Cups. It is not a fine grind nor a medium grind, it is some where in between. If you grind it to fine the water flows through the filter and gives you what I call a "dark stained coffee looking drink", but still without a real coffee taste. And if you use the coffee right out of the can or bag you purchased, it gives you a "lighter stained coffee looking drink", still not a real coffee drink. Being Military, I like to drink what we call Military or Police coffee, very strong to keep us awake.

So what I did was after using my last K-Cup, I opened it up and dumped out the grounds on a paper towel and let it dry. Once it dried, I felt the texture of the grounds. I got out my blender checking to make sure I had "Grind" as a choice on it, got my store bought coffee grounds out and placed about 1 cup of coffee in the blender and put it on "GRIND" for about 45 seconds, took a spoon and mixed the grounds up getting all the way to the bottom of the container, put the lid back on and put it on GRIND again, for another 45 seconds. Then felt the texture of my grounds verses the K-Cup grounds. One more time I mixed the grounds in the blender all the way to the bottom, and put it on "GRIND" again for another 30 seconds. Tested the texture and what do you know it felt the same.

Now here is something else I figured out, when you fill your My K-Cup filter you need to make sure you leave at least an 1/8 of an inch from the top of the filter itself and DO NOT PACK THE COFFEE GROUNDS IN THE FILTER! This is very important. The reason is, when the water flows into the filter if it is packed to tight it can not swirl the grounds around and may stop brewing or get plugged up. In any case you will not get a good cup of coffee and there will probably be lots of grounds in your cup.

Another thing I do is after brewing 3-4 cups in my Keurig, I leave the filter out place a cup in, and hit brew, small cup. This helps clean out the grounds whether you are using K-Cups or My K-Cup filter and helps prevent the grounds from plugging up the metal puncture point on your brewer. I have not had to use a paper clip to unplug the point, since I figured this out.

I was skeptical but it totally worked! I did this in combination with 'start brewing, turn off for 2 minutes, continue brewing' method to prewet the grounds. My coffee has gone from blah to kazam! Thanks so much, you made my mornings better.

Thank you so so much.... we just got this coffee maker and wanted to make our own coffee and was very disappointed that it made such weak coffee. So thank you for taking the time to share this!

Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much....after spending all of the money I did on purchasing the machine and the KCup....I was So frustrated by this! I was told by a sales person that the only way to get a stronger brew in the KCup was to grind the coffee in the largest grind possible. This made no sense to me, but I tried it anyway (and yep, you guessed it...epic FAIL). So I'm off to try your way now! Thank you again. Great instructible!
dbell in reply to RC2198Feb 4, 2012. 7:07 PM
Saleman == moron!

Finest grind possible, maybe.

I also bought a set of My-Kaps off eBay.
They let you clean out, refill, and reuse K-Cups with your own coffee.
The package insert states that most pre-packaged K-Cups use close to an Espresso grind. So for, it's working well, bit it's a little messy packing my usual amount of ground coffee into the cup.

Thank you so much. I have tried paper filters inside the reusable filter and still ended up with a weak cup of coffee. This works really well, but I wonder how long you can safely use the k-cup without it giving off some chemical?
Rich. says: Oct 4, 2011. 3:18 PM
Just a thought, instead of trying to cut free hand with scissors I just jammed the used kcup in the top of the My Kcup body and used a single edge razor blade to cut off the top using the My Kcup top as a cutting guide. That is a nice straight easy cut and then the filter and foil top all comes off at once. This mod worked great for me and improved the coffee immensely. Thanks for this instrucable!!

Thank you and thank the other user for the gasket idea this sounds like i might actually fall in love with my kurig again, i cant see paying 60cent a kcup when i need 2 just to equal the $1 cup of coffee from McD. i love good tasting coffee on the weekend when i want to enjoy it but i need my high octane during the week to get me going!!

Outstanding I couldn't live without my Keurig, as a mater of fact I own 3. I even have one in my truck. This fixes my only beef with it, but now it is even more important to me. Thank you gojimi :)

That's nice but I have a lack of words for a coffee addiction, I have the machine and this fix of stronger coffee should work for me. When I get a truck...who knows LOL.
braphelson says: Aug 17, 2011. 5:20 AM
Do you use a normal grind setting? I'd read they suggest a coarser setting for the my k-cup, but this looks to be more like the pre-packaged k-cups
cr0ybot says: Aug 12, 2011. 5:06 PM
Instead of shelling out $15-$18 in order to use only part of one "My K-Cup", you could just get one "My-Kap" from http://www.my-kap.com for $5. I've been using these with good results.

However, the method used in this instructable may allow you to purchase official k-cups less often, since the filter is reusable.

Thanks for the instructable!
SharryG says: Aug 11, 2011. 8:58 AM
i am just stupid i guess.... but do you still use the filter??
gojimi (author) in reply to SharryGAug 12, 2011. 2:32 PM
Yes you still use the black plastic and metal mesh filter. Your coffee grounds go in there. You then place it inside the my kcup body with modified used kcup already inserted as shown in step 6 and 7. Enjoy!
