No kidding? I think its because woodpeckers often hammer on houses and other Parts of ones property, and people do not like that. But if you've got a pileated on your suet feeder, DONT SHOOT!
I just remembered - US houses are far more likely to be wooden than in the UK.
Yeah well, I still dont get why people want to shoot birds. There are so many other ways to distract them from your house!
If you live in a wooden house...? Personally, my house is brick - I'd love to have a woodpecker visit my garden.
Erm, you say get a shotgun? perhaps thats not the best idea for shooting birds in your little old yard.

I've tried and tried and tried. The bird sits on our house's rain gutter at about 5 in the morning and trys to peck at the metal. It's been doing it for about a week and I've tried to scare him with a airsoft gun like you say but he sits right to the side of our door and anytime it opens he gets away. Oh well, I'm sure it will go away eventually.
