Ghost message egg

Ghost message egg
This may look like a regular, innocent Hard-cook egg¦ but what you cannot see is egg-actly what makes this egg so special! Pass a secret message to your friend using this trick. On the outside, the egg looks like any other egg. When the egg is peeled however, a message is remarkably written on the egg inside.

This is cool but is it o.k. to eat the egg? I would hate to waste a perfectly good egg.
Feb 28, 2009. 5:12 PMbettbee says:
Yes. Alum is used in cooking. For example to make pickles crispy and in baking powder.
May 17, 2009. 9:59 PMtanmanknex says:
would pickle juice work instead of alum?
Dec 29, 2007. 3:24 PMschorhr says:
I guess other coloring stuff might work? Anyway, about eating it: Alum is used in blood stopping sticks, nontoxic clay, deodorant crystals and in chineese fried Youtiao so my guess would be its eatable?

One wonders if it would be possible to dye the eggs afterward so one could have secret message easter eggs.

sweet... im gonna try this but im too lazy to buy alum... will any other spices work?
Feb 28, 2009. 5:17 PMbettbee says:
You can try baking powder if it contains alum, just be aware there may be a bit of a reaction when you add it to vinegar. I'm sure nothing violent, but use a large bowl with a wide opening to mix them in, in case of foaming.

Feb 13, 2008. 6:47 PMAburame Shino says:
Actually, Cock is just one way to say it. There is also Rooster. But Cock in english is one of the many slang terms for *ehem* penis. So I laughed.

I Love It!!! This will be great, I can secretly freak out my relatives next easter!
Feb 3, 2008. 11:59 AMchigozie says:
You boil the egg after doing this, not before? I would have thought that the liquid-ish (and I'm meant to be doing a chemistry A-level. Hehe.) state of unboiled egg whites would prevent this. I suppose... it's quite viscous, so maybe it stays in place. Interesting though... I'll definitely try it.
May 2, 2008. 5:06 PMAwesome Possum says:
No, you have to hard boil the egg first.
May 3, 2008. 9:14 AMchigozie says:
OK. That's what I thought. To me, the video implied that you had to paint the message, then put the light on to it, then boil it. It makes more sense if you have to boil it first.
May 9, 2008. 11:19 PMAwesome Possum says:
Yeah, what the vid shows is the victim boiling the trick egg, thinking it's a regular egg.
Mar 25, 2008. 10:38 PMw00ty32 says:
paint a cross on your very christian roommate, who also loves hardboiled eggs. hilarity shall ensue. +1 though

This is Awesome, Thank you for sharing this, I am diffenently going to put this in my "TO DO" box for something fun to do with my nephews, We like to do things like this but I also like to try to teach them something at the same time much like my Uncle did with me ;) And to the other poster who asked about other spices, though I did not write the original Post nor and I a chemist I don't think anything else would work The Alum and vinegar work together and form a chemical reaction of some sort and thats how it works much like the Vineger and baking soda trick, Flour just wont do Peace & Light Andy
