Give a butterfly knife a magnetic latch.

Give a butterfly knife a magnetic latch.
I acquired an inexpensive butterfly knife and ran into some problems with the latch. The latch would sometimes flip closed while doing tricks and was too loose to actually keep the knife closed when in my pocket. So, I decided to replace the latch with a magnetic latch.

Goals:
  • Latch strong enough to hold knife closed in pocket.
  • Latch not so strong that it gets in the way of doing tricks.

Materials:
  • Butterfly knife.
  • Small Neodymium Magnets.
  • Small Hex Nut.
  • 5 minute Epoxy.

Recommended Tools:
  • Dremel tool.
  • Sandpaper.

Step 1Remove the old latch.

Remove the old latch.
The first thing to do is remove the old latch. I used a Dremel tool with a heavy duty cutting wheel. To do this you will cut the pin that holds the latch to the handle. For best results you should cut it on the inside of the frame. If you cannot fit the cutting wheel in there then you should push the pin from one side and cut on the outside gap. After you have cut the pin the pin and latch should slide out easily.

Just buy a balisong practice knife, then sharpen it (Or, order a replacement blade online)

Beware, this doesn't work out the same way on balisongs that have tang pins, which prevents the bottom of the handles from touching.

Nice. It's a shame that I can't buy a butterfly knife in australia... Other than that fact this is pretty cool.

You could get a practice one that has a blunt blade and holes along the blade so you don't sharpen it! I bought one on ebay from Australia and even though its not a real one, its still pretty cool having one and being able to use it! BTW great magnet latch idea 'WhyIsThisOpen'! I may do that with mine in the future.
