I acquired an inexpensive butterfly knife and ran into some problems with the latch. The latch would sometimes flip closed while doing tricks and was too loose to actually keep the knife closed when in my pocket. So, I decided to replace the latch with a magnetic latch.
Goals:
- Latch strong enough to hold knife closed in pocket.
- Latch not so strong that it gets in the way of doing tricks.
Materials:
- Butterfly knife.
- Small Neodymium Magnets.
- Small Hex Nut.
- 5 minute Epoxy.
Recommended Tools:
The first thing to do is remove the old latch. I used a Dremel tool with a heavy duty cutting wheel. To do this you will cut the pin that holds the latch to the handle. For best results you should cut it on the inside of the frame. If you cannot fit the cutting wheel in there then you should push the pin from one side and cut on the outside gap. After you have cut the pin the pin and latch should slide out easily.
