In this instructable I'm going to show you how to make this simple and beautiful wooden rack for your wine glasses that fits on top of a wine bottle. Its a nice way to showcase a nice bottle of wine and an easy and interesting way of serving a bottle and glasses to the table. If your invited over for dinner or a party and you feel like bringing a little more than just a bottle of wine, add one of these a set of glasses from the dollar store and you've got a pretty impressive hand made gift that will last even after the wine is finished.

You will need:

-A piece of wood (about 20X20 cm, depending on you glasses).

-Some cardboard and a box cutter (optional but highly recommended for models)

-Pencil, eraser and ruler.

-Saw.

-Drill and drill bits (I use a 32 mm for the center and a 16 mm for the glasses, but it might vary depending on the glasses you use).

-Sandpaper.

-Paint/varnish (optional).

Step 1: Measure and Sketch

I recommend making a cardboard model before the wood one just to make sure you got all the measurements right, I had to make two cardboard models because the first one had some things that needed adjustment).

Set a bottle of wine on the table and surround it by 4 glasses distributed equally (you might choose to leave a little space between the bottle and glasses, measure the distance between two adjacent glasses, that is the width (and length) of the rack( you can round it up just to have some extra space).

Cut a piece of cardboard according to the size you measured (I used and 18X18 cm piece) and draw lines between the two sets of opposite corners to find the center, use something round (slightly bigger than the top of a wine bottle) to draw a circle around the center (I used a shot glass for the model and a 32 mm drill bit for the wood).

Measure the width of the leg on your wine glass at its narrowest point, draw a line on each corner of the cardboard (as if you are cutting out the corner) just slightly wider than that (my glass's narrowest point was 11 mm so I used 13 mm width). Connect the lines on opposite corners creating a sort of X.

At a distance from the center equal to the radius of the bottle+the radius of the bottom of the glass+a little extra (for me, 35 mm for the bottle+30 mm for the glass+3 mm extra= 78 mm) draw 4 circle. The diameter of these circles should be a little bigger than the width of the X you drew earlier (I used a salt shaker for the cardboard and a 16 mm drill bit for the wood). The purpose of these 4 circles is to let the glasses "sink in" a little and keep them from slipping out.

Carefully cut the cardboard on the marking use a box cutter and test it out, make another cardboard model with adjustments if necessary.

Step 2: The Wood

Once you're happy with your cardboard model, cut a wooden square the size you need and draw all the markings according to your final model.

Drill the center hole and the 4 circles first using a drill and drill bits as seen in the pictures, its much harder to cut these 4 holes nicely if you already cut the lines out.

Use a saw to cut out the rest.

Step 3: Finish

Use sandpaper to smooth it all out (wrap the sand paper around a pencil to get to those hard-to-reach places) and add some paint or varnish as you see fit, you could even personalize it if you intend to give it to someone as a gift.

There's a lot of room for customizing, you could use a circle or an octagon instead of a square, you can paint it in many different ways and you can even add special holes to hold wine gadgets (such as a screw opener, a special cap or a pouring tip).
