Glow in the Dark Hair Gel by hairyconiption

Step 2: Make the Gel

Fill the container with about (measurements not even close to accurate) 1/2 cup of gel, next add 1.2 tsp of glo powder, Put lid on container and shake it vigerously,
Charge the gel mixture in the sun or under a bright light (black light). Put it on your hair and voila, glowing hair gel.

How long the stored gel will retain it's glow? This is an interesting instructable I must say :) Btw, after you try this, you still have all you hair intact right? Just checking :)

Hair still here. The glow can be seen for hours, this batch of glow powder didn't seem to last as long as usual and the plunger for the gel container got bunged up by the larger than usual granuals of powder... I am wondering if I can use a pedistal and morter to grind the crystals finer.... also wondering where I can get a pedistal and morter to carry out aforementioned grinding.

Important information - As a general The smaller the glow pigment size (granule size) the lesser the glow effect. In other words the finer you grind the glow pigments the lesser the glow.
Here something else to try.
In you hair gel  mix in fluorescent powder, as this will glow - fluoresce under uv black lights as is used in most decent night clubs.
If you can not obtain fluorescent powder, you could get some fluro ink or extract the fluorescent ink for a Fluro Highlighter pen.

i believe it is mortar & pestel, and i just saw both wood and marble ones at TJ Maxx/marshalls, if you are in the U.S. oh...this is an older post, oh well. very cool, cool outcome.

Keep in mind that Phosphorescent Powder is manufactured in grades. The vast majority of powder sold on the Internet is Grade 5. This is why some powders outperform others. Here is an article that offers various comparisons:

There is also a forum that discusses these powders in detail at:

Run by your local wal-mart and put out $10-$15 into a Coffee Grinder. I doubt it would be too abrasive for the powder, but try it with a small batch first :)

If I can post URLs this is the sort of grinder you'll want to look for (one in which the powder is loaded in the top and grinds until you stop it, the more expensive ones will pass the powder through a sieve down into a receiver - this second class will only take more time to get any similar results):

A coffee grinder is excellent step up from pestle+mortar and a quicker (cheaper) alternative to a ball-mill when it comes to granulizing or mixing powders. Additionally it's easier to find too :)

I've got an entire bottle of plastic BB's that you can buy from Wal*Mart, perhaps you could grind them up fine if you can't find the powder?
