I wrapped the plant in wax paper and pulled the paper thru the neck and it worked great. Pull on the wax paper, not the plant.

I "braided" yarn around the leaves and stems of my tomato plant before i inserted it in the bottle so I wouldn't have to worry about tearing any or getting them stuck between the neck and the dirt... just an idea. yarn won't pull too hard on the plant like an elastic and you can snip it in one place and unbraid it to remove it.

Wrapping cellophane around the leaves worked nicely.

Thanks vv07f, I was just wondering about how to not only protect my plant as it is funneld through the whole that I wouldn't be wasting plants.

I had issues with this part. I tried wrapping paper around it and even wrapping jute around it. Perhaps my plant was already to large. I ended up cutting just above the bottle neck so there was a bigger hole. I used peat moss (which is often used to grow orchids) for the covering and I also stuffed some up the bottom hole since I had to make the larger hole. Hopefully it will help prevent the dirt from coming out

Great idea, DebH57! TKG said: "You could carefully wrap a piece of paper, like in a cone, around the plant to help slide it through the neck of the bottle." I would add: How about keeping the plant in it's pot, wrap the leaves with the paper cone, lower the taped pop bottle bottom down over the plant--letting the paper cone slip through the neck hole, flip the bottle over with the potted plant inside, and then lift the plant's pot out of the soda bottle. This might make the transition a little easier and cleaner.
