Introduction: "Got Milk? Drawer Cabinet" or "esta Cajonera Es La Leche!"

About: I begun in that artistic/craftsman world by the hand of my mother who is potter and art teacher. Also in my father's hobby wood-workshop I learn to lathe and use all kind of tools. I coursed some studies in…
Hi instructable's fans!
I need to improve my workshop with little drawers to stack some tools and/or various materials. But I'm not convinced on spend 12 or more €uros in a plastic ones as I found on the "all at €uro" store for only 3 drawer...
And after some days thinking on it, one morning while putting my coffee’s milk in a mug, I realize about the milk carton are a good material to do this, and I decided to build my drawers with these dairy can's.

To build this, I used only recycled materials. I have the lucky about in my city (Barcelona) all the weeks there is one day where everybody can throw old furnitures on the street (not in a chaos! on the corner or near the door),  to be recycled by the city council clean brigades... and all  Barcelona’s students which pick'em up to furnish her flats, or all kind of people to re-use wood or furnitures... like myself...
Anyway, this summer I found some chipboard plates with blue colored veneer and two large thin hardboard.

With one of this blue chipboard plates, one of the hardboard ones, some milk cartons, blue wrapping paper, recycled from last Christmas presents, carpenter white glue, a power jigsaw, a drill (can be a multi-purpose like a Dremmel one), scissors, 15cm Threaded rod, some clamps, and a rule to take measures, I go to buil up this "Dairy Drawers".

Let's see how I build it (if you want, of course)

*---------------------------------------------------------------*

Hola Instructableseros!

Step 1: 1-Design and Collect Materials - Planeando Y Recogiendo Los Materiales.

For my requirements I need some little drawers and two bigger ones to keep in them some pencils and wood sticks.

I make a little hand-draw design  which serves to think in the measures. The base measure are the ones of a milk's tetra-pack which are of 6 x 9cm. To decide the height of a drawer, I measure which is the deeper I can reach with bare fingers. If I do the single drawers deeper, I can't take what I put in there!
In my case, what my fingers could reach are 6cm depth.

With this in mind, I decide about my Dairy Drawers measures needed to be 38 X 20,1 X 9,5 cm (width, height, deep) to contain 2 single big drawers, and a matrix of 3x3 little drawers.
I plan to open the big drawers by swinging them and the little ones by pulling them.

To collect materials, is the easiest part of this ibles, and consist in take breakfast and once the milk cartons or "tetra-briks" (from oat, soy, rice or juice from orange, tomato, cow*... etc... ) are empty, cut them to unfold, and clean it up with warm water.

*----------------------------------------------------------*

* Yes, cow juice :P
* Si, lo sé, zumo de vaca :P

Step 2: Cutting and Assembling - Cortando Y Ensamblando

Once the design was made, the measurements must be marked onto the wood with pencil and rule. The only important thing I must get in touch is about the chipboard plate is decorated on all sides, and I plan the cuttings on the way to use it for all sides of my drawers.
I got no circular saw nor band-saw and for cut this I need to use a jigsaw doing slow cutting work to prevent curved sides.
With hammer and chisel I do the joints on the hardboard. And with the drill equipped with a spade's bit I do the hole where the metallic nut to hold the Threaded rod goes. In that hole, I place the metallic nut fixed with hot glue.
To assemble the external structure, and to mount the internal structure without any problems, I joint the side without the metallic nut with the upper and down faces.  I do little holes with a dremel drill where the screws goes, with this I prevent the veneer to crack.
Now, it's time to build up the hardboard internal structure which subject the little drawers, but without installing the plate where the Threaded rod goes. Having done that, and before mount the other chipboard external side, we need to mount the big drawers in the Threaded rod, but... Stop! Before it, we need to wrap this drawers (if we want it).

*-----------------------------------------------------------------*

Step 3: Wrap - Forrado

Before to wrap the bigger drawers, I need to perforate them where they goes subject with the Threaded rod. To measure where I need to do this hole, I mark it before with the hardboard plate which have the metallic nut fixed. Once marked I do the hole with a wood drill, but you can use a cutter, scissors or a similar object...
After that I need to see where this drawer must be cut in diagonal to allow to be opened by swinging it. To see this, I place the drawer where must go and mark the back upper point which contact with the chipboard structure. From two or three millimeters down this point to the upper front part of this drawer, I do a diagonal cut to allow the aperture.
At this point I begin to wrap the drawer as if I'm wrapping a book. All kind of paper can be used, kraft, scrap, or anything or if you like the milk carton decoration, nothing. In my milk cartons, the bottom part is where the bar-codes goes for one side and the farm address for the other, and I don't like that. I use blue wrapping kraft paper which left over from enveloping last Christmas presents, sticked to the drawers with carpenter white glue extended with a brush.
Once this drawers was wrapped, I feel there is nothing to pull them to open, and for that I cut two tongue shaped pieces of milk carton. I wrap them and attach in the front part of these drawers.

*----------------------------------------------------*

Step 4: Structure Final Mounting - Montaje Final De La Estructura

Once I do all that, I insert the threaded rod to the metallic nut fixed in the lateral plate of the inner structure being careful to do not pass the threaded rod until the end to allow fix it to the other nut by grabbing it with pliers.
I place the big drawers in the Threaded rod separated one to another by a washer.
And I put this structure in place and once this is done, put also the missing external chipboard side, and fix it with two screws.
With a pair of pliers i coil the threaded rod until it reach the other nut and lay in her final place.

*--------------------------------------------*

Step 5: Finishing - Acabados

At this point I begin to cut and wrap the little drawers.
The basic form of them are rectangular but in one of the superior sides I left a thonge to allow to pull them.
In this moment, I think to build some pullers made of wood, buttons or buy some at the hardware store, but in order to use the minimum quantity of materials I do these pullers with a thongue shaped piece of the same milk carton.
I wrap this drawers like the other ones, with carpenter glue extended with a brush.
For the pullers first I wrap the external side leaving some tabs to bend at the inner side and cover this inner side with half moon shaped piece of paper.

*-----------------------------------------------*

Step 6: Hangers - Colgadores

The last step was mount some hangers to the backward side of the chest drawer to allow it to hang if needed.
To do that, with the help of hammer and chisel, I cut a little V shaped slot . Cover it with a metallic flat bar fixed with screws and...

That's it!
Do you like it? I hope yes!
Bye!

P.S. How You can see this is a design which can be easily converted in a modular wall chest or with a simply re-wrap changed to give them a interesting new life...

P.S.S. Sorry for my bad english grammar... I'm taking online classes, but ... steady ones... :P

*---------------------------------------------*
