My daughter, who loves to knit and crochet, gave me the idea for these cookies.

Step 1: Cut and Bake

Cut and bake square sugar cookies using your favorite recipe. I used a 3" scalloped square cookie cutter but if you don't have one, you can cut squares using a pizza cutter and a clean plastic ruler.

Step 2: Make Royal Icing

Make a batch of royal icing. I use this recipe posted by Sweetopia. Follow Sweetopia's instructions for thinning the icing using the "10 Second" rule.

Step 3: Outline and Flood

Picture of Outline and Flood
Using the thinned Royal Icing and a pastry bag equipped with a #2 or #3 tip , pipe a square outline around the cookie and then fill in with more thinned icing. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight.

Step 4: Pipe Crocheted Design

Divide remaining icing into separate bowls and tint to desired colors. Using a #1 or #2 tip - pipe a series of little squares in three colors as shown starting with the center square. Then go back and "squiggle" over your lines to give the effect of yarn. Squiggle a border around the whole thing and you're done!

Congratulations on winning a second prize in the cookie challenge. :)

(I really thought you would have won... I didn't think it was fair that gingerbread houses were even allowed... oh well...)

LOVE these designs! The frosting really does like thread because of the texture. So cute! They'd be great for treats at a crafting or sewing party. :)
Fun it looks just like a granny square!
