Since I have a few of the early model N64 that can be RGB modded and some PSOne screens, I'd use them for true RGB and a 5" screen. Otherwise this is very helpful. Now to get off my lazy rear and get started...
If you live in the midwest, you can go to a local Vintage Stock (a store that sells old games, comics, music, etc.) and they would have plenty of old games. But beware, the people there are quite unique in a strange way.
hey zachariah i was wondering if you have made a gamecube portable possibly after you made this one? because i want to make a gcp but i dont know if the case for this n64 would be ok for a gamecube portable... what do you think? and where did you get all the information toi build with? benheck?
Oh ya those are great because they can run every single n64 game at full speed with absolutly no problems!
P.S. That was sarcasm. P.S.S. Everyone has a droid or iPod these days that can emulate n64 games. P.S.S.S. Making this takes true skill. Anyone can press a button on a phone.
yeah, that's not a N64, you run an emulator...durr... he made a classic console ingeniously into a portable, which Nintendo should have done a long time ago!!!
iv been preparing for my own attempt im thinking of integrating a gameshark with 4 controller inputs and a A/V out in a 1/8th plug. i have even done a sketchup model my only problem now is finding a good screen and finding the time
I have made one myself. They do not take that much time if you are dedicated to the task. I used an old portable dvd player that did not work all too well (reading disc wise) and then i took the dvd player and refitted it to allow n64 games to come from the top of the casing and i put a power switch on the side. problem: only 4 hrs before it dies but i am about ready to install a portable charger outlet on one to allow me to charge it in a car bc i was an idiot and forgot to keep the charger car charger from the dvd player attached. btw 400 in my opinion is ripping yourself off BUT you are a good guy :) Your system also looks much better than mine. what do you use for the casing?
do you think it would be possible to use the hardware in an SNES system to do the same thing? let me know what you think please.
He really is a good guy. And extremely talented too! But to answer your question, he said he used an 8x5x1 Plano Large Fly Fishing Box for his case, he ripped out the compartments and everything, and scrubbed the residue off for hours til it was good and clean. I myself am going to try this bad boy out when i get all the equipment i need, ive been researching for weeks now, and im pretty sure ive got a good foundation. im gonna try to make it exactly like his Grape 64 because it looks extremely impressive. Its rare to find portable n64s even worth looking at lol xD im in LOVE with this one. Zacariah...mad kudos to you.
Oh my dear God... I'm actually 100% serious. I would like one of these SO MUCH. Pleeease get back to me soon. I'm willing to wait a month, and to pay the $400.! Thanks. -Kacie.
Ahhh this is brilliant. What is the process involved in making the plastic shells for these kind of things? I literally have no idea. Seriously epic finish on it though man, congratulations.
Good sah! i do declare this is one of the most marvelous contraptions i have ever had the privellege of laying eyes on! i would very much appreciate it if you could contact me at: shankeo01@gmail.com about purchase of one of these devices! i have cash, but prefer paypal.
I know a lot of these comments are old, and that this one might not even be noticed, but just in case anyone does read this; To those of you making remarks about psp's and ps3 laptops, Nintendo and playstation games are not similar for the most part. They are quite different and some people don't like playstation; To the maker, I believe you could make a lot of money with this particular design if you patent it and use some better advertising. Good luck and this is a great idea.
"I believe you could make a lot of money with this particular design if you patent it and use some better advertising."
I'm not 100% sure of the legalities of this, but it's probably illegal to sell considering it's not FCC Inspected or UL Listed, and most likely violates Nintendo's copyrights & patents.
Dude i have been looking for someone to make me one for sometime and I am willing to pay for the time and effort it takes to make one would you be willing to share how you made it or to construct another? if so please email me at pieceuhcake@yahoo.com I would be willing to negotiate on anything, and i have to add that you are my hero!! ^-^
hey man this thing is awesome, do you think you would be able to do an email interview with me? I would love to feature how you did this on my blogsite! Its prefect I really want one! If you would be willing to talk to me you can email me at info.critsngiggles@gmail.com I would love to feature this.
I AM 100% INTERESTED IN BUYING THIS!!! Please e-mail me @ nikole.natali@gmail.com! This is probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen you have serious talent! I would never be able to make one of these...
It wouldn't work with games that require a memory pack. I never enjoyed turok, and all the games I wanted to play didnt require the memory card. It's necessary for very few games. If you want to include it you'd just have to leave the memory card slot from the controller intact and mount it somewhere on the back of the unit...
DUDE. That is wicked!!! I totally want one now. I love old video game systems and this would entertain me during all sorts of road trips. Absolutely brilliant!
Id like you to make me one of these, ill pay the $400 you request, if you will seriously make me one, e-mail me please at yoshikidneo@yahoo.com. Thanks alot.
I've heard of people being able to hack their N64's to allow them to do things such as 4-player grand prix in mario kart, and i've heard of guys who can do system links between two n64's allowing them to do 8 man mario kart races. If you or anyone reading this knows how to do this please let me know, i am willing to pay.
To download PDFs you need to have a pro membership. I also have a harp of sorts in construction which when finished will be uploaded as an instructable.
"There's no situation where you will use [the Z and L button] at the same time."
While most games only use one or the other, that statement is not 100% correct. There are games that use the two buttons. A small example is using the L button as a taunt in "Super Smash Bros." Another example is using the Gameshark with "Ocarina of Time." The well known "L to fly" cheat uses the L button while still using the middle prong to move. You can use the Z button to do "Z-Targeting" to fly around an object. This method uses the Z and L button at the same time.
It's not a big deal, and you are the one that designed the portable system which is awesome, but please try to think about these things. I would suggest a better system for these two buttons for the future.
Ahaha! I never used the Gameshark too much. I've got one, but when I tried it on zelda It ended up screwing up the cartridge, so I was too afraid to use it anymore after that. lol
I definitely could. I broke the memory card slot off of the controller for this portable. Almost every game I have ever played on the N64 the Memory card slot wasn't required. I could have included it, but considering I rarely ever use the port, I decided not to. I think the only game I ever really used it for was Pokemon Stadium and transferring pokemon.
HE, NICE JOB BRO!!!!!, one thing, how did you make the out-side? it doesnt look like its a lunch box or something, I some thing to do this summer how mush change is there to screw this up? just got 1 N64 dont wanne beak it.
or can you make more and sell it?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? pleaze?
The odds of breaking it are proportional to the amount of change that happens. Just putting on a new case + Screen and battery, leaving the mobo inside its metal shell with the heatsink in, it is unlikely, and results in a fairly small N64, because the original's case is way too big.
It looks like he repurposed a plastic pencil case, or a toolbox.
haha, well before I screw up my N64 I try to make my Sega 16 bit porteble if that works ill make my N64 do the same (Ill make an Instructable of it). and I think Ill just buy some plastic and heat it up to bend it in the shape I want.
PDF Downloads As a Pro member, you will gain access to download any Instructable in the PDF format.
You also have the ability to customize your PDF download.
that is BOSS!
you should seriosly sell those!
Maybe a slot for a n64 transfer pak or a rumble pak also
(+[__]::)
i would buy 2
I just want instructables to get a tad more credit. or else it'll become a link dump.
I mean there's only one step...
My HTC can't even handle running it's own OS!
