Step 27Make the drive belt

Make the drive belt
Materials:
Four nylon stockings or legs from sheer panty-hose

The drive belt is made of four nylon stockings or sheer panty-hose legs, tied together with fisherman's knot s.

First tie a loose overhand knot close to an end of one leg; slide the end of another leg through, and tie an overhand knot in it that encloses the first leg.  Tighten the knots a little by pushing each overhand knot closer to its leg's end; avoid pulling on a short end.

Repeat with a third and fourth leg to make a long belt, one knot short of a loop.  Wet the belt thoroughly and give it a hard stretch; under mild tension it should be about ten feet long. Put the belt around the drum and the pulley wheel and shorten it only to prevent pulley slipping.  If the belt is lifting the drum's underside, it's too tight and will hold the drum fabric away from the water in the tray.

Fasten the two ends of the belt, and lift it onto the pulley wheel.
