Christmas Tree from a Magazine

A simple Christmas tree made from 2 magazines.

Makes for a neat decoration, or even a centerpiece (If you're the crafty type.....) and is tons of fun for kids!


If you've ever made a paper airplane, you can make this tree!

Step 1: What You'll Need

Basically what you need is two magazines. The small hard ones are the best. I haven't tried with bigger magazines because these ones are the only resistant ones.

You'll also need some glue or staples.

My mom and I made these when I was littler out of old Sears and Roebuck catalogs which had to be at least 2 in thick. Then she would spray paint it green and we would glue things to it to make ornaments and garland.

 If I could tell you one thing, it would be PATIENCE! I'm trying it with a giant IKEA catalog and it's taking FOREVER. But, I'm hoping for some good results!

I had problems getting the two halves together, and to get it to stand up better, I glued three pencils together, along with three halves at the bottom to make a Y for support. I then covered that in glue and put it into the middle of the tree, this made a little stand to keep the bottom from smashing and it leaning over.

no offense but my grandmother made those when she was little but i think its a good idea i made one and it is grate. i even made 3 and stacked them to make it more realistic

I made a christmas tree with two big magazines (about A4 paper), put a paper ribbon (made from another instructable found here) on the top, and sprayed all over with golden spray: it looks wonderfull as a christmas decoration in my office! I'll post a photo asap.

Readers Digest work really well for this. You can use bobby pins to hold the 2 halves together. (Put a pin or two at the top and at the bottom.) If you paint the magazine red with spray paint, and then glue cotton balls around the 'belt', you can then make a face and hat for the top and have a nifty Santa.

WOW!!! Does that bring back memories or what? We used Reader's Digest to make a Santa Claus, & Mrs. Claus in 5th grade. I'll try to find some pictures to post.

Used to make these from Reader's Digest; however, the top of corner page was folded back to spine then bottom portion folded all the way to spine. That way it stands on it's own. Thanks for bringing back the idea again!

Oh does this bring back memories. We used to make these when I was a kid. We would spray paint them green and while paint was wet sprinkle with glitter.

Here's the one I made. I sewed some beads around to make it look like garland, and to keep it together. It's one LL bean catalog. My daughter likes it a lot. She thinks it's the big x-mas tree's baby.

I have not seen one of these since I was a kid!! I can remember seeing them painted gold and the macaroni used to decorate the "tree" was also painted gold or any other color! Nice nostalgic moment! Thanks~ :)

Nice instructable, you're right I do like it. I'll have to use this for next Christmas. I reckon if you put glue gun droops on it they could look like tinsel and bunting. Anyhow, nice instructable.
