Christmas Tree from a Magazine

Picture of Christmas Tree from a Magazine
entire tree 2.JPG
A simple Christmas tree made from 2 magazines.

Makes for a neat decoration, or even a centerpiece (If you're the crafty type.....) and is tons of fun for kids!

If you've ever made a paper airplane, you can make this tree!

Step 1: What You'll Need

Picture of What You'll Need
Basically what you need is two magazines. The small hard ones are the best. I haven't tried with bigger magazines because these ones are the only resistant ones.

You'll also need some glue or staples.

Step 2: First Fold

Picture of First Fold
step 2 draw.bmp
step 1 3.JPG
Take the corner flap of the page and fold it inside to form a triangle.

Sorry but I had to blur the pictures a bit to avoid any trouble

Step 3: Second Fold

Picture of Second Fold
step 2 1.JPG
step 2 2.JPG
Now take the flap and fold it inside again. See the pictures

Again, sorry for the blur.

Step 4: Lather, Rinse, REPEAT!

Repeat the afore mentioned with every page. To make it easier, don't fold the cover until you've folded at least 5 pages, that way you won't get mixed up.

Every now and then squeeze the pages together so they dont get in the way of folding the other pages

Step 5: Half-way There!

Picture of Half-way There!
Congradulations! You've made.....half a tree. Hmn.. that dosen't look enough..what do you do?

Make another one!

To make this tree you will need to make two halves from two magazines.

Step 6: Finishing Up

Picture of Finishing Up
Now that you've got two halves, glue them together or staple them. This is kinda tricky so I couldn't take a picture of me glueing the halves. When glueing the tops you should squeeze them for a while because they tend to unstick

There You Have a Tree!!!

You can use some construction paper of some sort or cylinder to hold the tree up.

You can make other things to make it look good. You could try painting it, adding LED's, use your imagination.

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

My mom and I made these when I was littler out of old Sears and Roebuck catalogs which had to be at least 2 in thick. Then she would spray paint it green and we would glue things to it to make ornaments and garland.

If I could tell you one thing, it would be PATIENCE! I'm trying it with a giant IKEA catalog and it's taking FOREVER. But, I'm hoping for some good results!

I had problems getting the two halves together, and to get it to stand up better, I glued three pencils together, along with three halves at the bottom to make a Y for support. I then covered that in glue and put it into the middle of the tree, this made a little stand to keep the bottom from smashing and it leaning over.

Thanks for the instructable. I really enjoyed it.

Here are the pictures, I also used a paper towel to make a tree skirt.

My grandmother showed me how to make these -- we used to use Reader's Digest. :)
mine too. brings back memories. thanks, really cool.
I made a christmas tree with two big magazines (about A4 paper), put a paper ribbon (made from another instructable found here) on the top, and sprayed all over with golden spray: it looks wonderfull as a christmas decoration in my office! I'll post a photo asap.
This is the picture of my christmas tree: I added a bit of gold spray paint and a ribbon (found instruction on Gift Wrap section!)

A ribbon would be a nice touch! Please do post pics!
Readers Digest work really well for this. You can use bobby pins to hold the 2 halves together. (Put a pin or two at the top and at the bottom.) If you paint the magazine red with spray paint, and then glue cotton balls around the 'belt', you can then make a face and hat for the top and have a nifty Santa.

Bobby pins would help......thanks! And, the santa idea is great! I will add that! Thanks a lot!!

WOW!!! Does that bring back memories or what? We used Reader's Digest to make a Santa Claus, & Mrs. Claus in 5th grade. I'll try to find some pictures to post.

Please do! Also, would you mind rating this instructable?

Used to make these from Reader's Digest; however, the top of corner page was folded back to spine then bottom portion folded all the way to spine. That way it stands on it's own. Thanks for bringing back the idea again!

Thanks! Could you explain what you're trying to say?

I <3 this! and can't wait to make one! Thanks :)

(:D

Here's the one I made. I sewed some beads around to make it look like garland, and to keep it together. It's one LL bean catalog. My daughter likes it a lot. She thinks it's the big x-mas tree's baby.

Oh, cool! I haven't seen one of these since I was a kid. ;->
Nice instructable, you're right I do like it. I'll have to use this for next Christmas. I reckon if you put glue gun droops on it they could look like tinsel and bunting. Anyhow, nice instructable.
