This project was part of the new technology curriculum at my school. The project incorporated the idea of going green with a marine theme. Our school is close to an ocean, so incorporating a marine theme into out work is common. For this project, we made marine themed costumes out of only cardboard. There is no tape, glue, or any other bindings. My group decided to have use Marine Nektons (freely swimming creatures) as our theme. I made a Moray Eel, which was fun to make. My group helped me out along the way, and I helped them. Our final projects came out nice.

Design and develop a recycled costume that is interesting and uses only slotted construction.

Part P1: FRONT BODY
1. Measure cardboard (S1) with ruler (T3) to 48" X 24"
2. Trace rectangle with a slightly rounded top on the cardboard (S1) with a pencil (T4)
3. Cut out cardboard (S1) with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
4. Trace head hole with a compass (T5) and pencil (T4) to a size larger than the child's head
5. Cut out head hole with a utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
6. Cut out shoulder strap holes with utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1) 2" down from the sides of the head hole
7. Cut connector slots with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1) at bottom of the curve and 1' up from the bottom.
8. Cut three slots with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1) for the jaw (P4) above and below the head hole

Part P2: BACK BODY
1. Measure cardboard (S1) with ruler (T3) to 48" X 24"
2. Trace rectangle with a curved top on to the cardboard (S1) with a pencil (T4)
3. Cut out cardboard (S1) with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
4. Use the front body (P1) to trace shoulder strap (P5) and connector (P3) slots with a pencil (T4)
5. Cut shoulder strap (P5) and connector slots (P3) with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
6. Trace slots with a pencil (T4) for the caudal fin (P6) 12" from the top and bottom
7. Cut slots with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)

2. Trace rectangle on the cardboard (S1) with a pencil (T4)
3. Cut out connectors with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting a cutting mat (T1)
4. Cut angled in slots with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
5. Cut the ends with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1) to make them more curved and less noticeable

Part P4: JAW
1. Measure a 12" X 6" crescent on the cardboard (S1) with a ruler (T3)
2. Cut out the crescent with 3 tabs on the concave side with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
3. Trace varying triangles with a pencil (T4) onto the cardboard (S1)
4. Cut out triangles of random sizes with a tab at the bottom with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)

3. Cut out the rectangle with 2 tabs 6" from the top and bottom with an utility knife (T2) on a cutting mat (T1)
