Grill-less Grilled Cheese

Grill-less Grilled Cheese
Everybody loves a tasty, warm grilled cheese, but there's so much hassle involved when it comes to heating up the grill or messing with pans and grease.   This instructable will teach you how to make a perfect grilled cheese with nothing more than an ordinary toaster, a microwave, and a plate.  Prep time:  about 2 minutes.

Step 1Preparing the Bread & Cheese

Preparing the Bread & Cheese
The first step of making your grill-less cheese sandwich is the bread.  Take two slices of your preferred bread and place them in the toaster on a medium heat.

Just assembling the sandwich and putting it in the microwave will leave you with a limp, sweaty mush.  That's why you have to put the bread in the toaster.  The goal here is to lightly brown the bread.  We don't want to fully cook it yet because we will finish the heating process in the microwave.

While your bread is being toasted, cut up some thin slices of your favorite cheese.  The best results tend to come from cutting your own block cheese.  Singles are a little too thin, and are likely to turn to liquid once they hit the microwave.

Appalling! This is NOT a grilled cheese sandwich - it's TOASTED cheese sandwich. It's an entirely different thing. If you want a toasted cheese sandwich then by all means make a toasted cheese sandwich, but if you want a grilled cheese sandwich you've gotta grill it. It's one of those "hence the name" things. The grilled cheese sandwich is one of the simplest dishes known to humankind. It's certainly not any more complicated to construct than the toasted cheese sandwich that's described here. I shudder to think that some grilled cheese virgin might actually make one of these and believe he's consuming a grilled cheese sandwich. Hopefully I've made myself clear enough that I won't have to come back and straighten this out again...

That would be the point I was trying to make - it's not possible to make a "grill-less" grilled cheese sandwich. You can make a "grill-less" toasted cheese sandwich, using a toaster instead of a grill, which is what this project accomplished.

I used to make melted swiss cheese in untoasted white bread in a microwave. Just stick the cheese inside the bread and nuke till melted. Don't nuke too long or the bread gets 'weird.'
