I don't want to keep you guessing, so I'll tell how it works. Contrary to popular belief the effect isn't magic or even a divine intervening, as far as I know, what I do know is that there is a large glycoprotein chain called Miraculin. Miraculin isn't just any protein chain, in fact it was so large scientists had a hard time finding it, ironic but its the truth. When the miraculin is consumed it binds to the taste buds and is activated by acidic/bitter foods, releasing sugars onto your taste buds, creating the pleasurable sensation which is Miracle Fruit.

Just to clarify how it works: Miraculin binds to the sweet taste receptors, temporarily altering them in a way that they are activated by acid. No sugar is released as a result and bitter compounds will not produce a sweet taste. Sweet tastes mask bitter, so you may perceive a bitter food as less bitter if it's also acidic when paired with miraculin.

i'm a bit new to the unusual plant hobby. i'm really interested in growing miracle fruit after i saw it in a National Geographic magazine. I recently sprouted some giant sequoia seeds, 22 sprouts but only 15 still survive, but you probably don't care. anyway, coo info about these plants. i'm going to give it a try, and who knows? i'll post another comment in a few days but as of now i gotta go. And no, Putzer, PLANTMAN is not my real name. (no negativity intended.)

My grandparents brought back Giant Sequoia seeds to WA State (Mukilteo) back in the 1950's, and planted them in a row along their back fenceline. The trees were well over 8' tall when I last saw them around 1975. They were probably cut down because it was all view property and McMansions are being built there. Not that I'd want one, it's all soil on top of clay, and a good earthquake will remove everything above the clay.

I'm interested in your sequoia seed project. Of the 15 that survived, how many of them are still growing? How did you germinate the sequoia seeds?

Sequoia is the shortest word in the english language (or all latin based languages but I'm not sure) that has all five vowels in it.

In Italian there is "aiuole" which is the plural of "aiuola" which means a little space where people grows flowers in a garden.

Strengths is the longest single syllable word in the english language with only one vowel in it. hehe But that's off the topic. Awesome ible, will be checking out the seed shop. I did read about these before, never really thought of cultivating them. Documentaries don't usually give the impression the jungle fauna is for sale. Also, to Plantman... where'd you happen to come by those sequoia seeds? Just curious.
