Guitar Pick Holder Just Like in Concerts

This is a simple guitar pick holder, inspired like the ones in concerts; where they place extra picks along the microphone stand boom for easy reach. Well, I don't perform in gigs nor concerts, but I just like how the picks lined up nicely and how easy it is to access them.

This is an easy project and would only take 10 to 15 minutes. To make the holder, you would require the following items :

~ 1 Binder Bar
~ 1 A4 size Foam Board (thin high density foam)
~ Steel ruler
~ Cutter
~ Magic Tape
~ 3 mm diameter rod (fine tread screw, nails etc)

Step 1: Getting Started

Measure 3 cm and cut the foam board along its length using a cutter. You will end up with a strip of 3 cm foam board. The measurement will depend on the size of your binder bar. However in general; when folded in two along its length, the foam board should be wider than the binder bar. Refer to the following steps if not clear.

Step 2: Prep Your Foam Board

Fold the foam board in two along its length; one side slightly wider than the other (approximately 4 mm). Then wrap and tape the foam board to a steel ruler. You need to use a steel ruler because there will be some serious pushing to insert the foam board into the binder bar.

Step 3: Insert Foam Board Into the Binder Bar

The earlier prep foam board will be inserted from one end of the binder bar and pushed along till it is fully in. Using a steel rod (a nail works too), put it in front of the steel ruler to make it easier to push in the foam and protect the foam from tearing off the ruler.

The foam will expand a bit when you are pushing it in, so the taping on the ruler might need some adjustments along the way. Please be patient and guide the foam slowly ensuring is in properly. Towards the end it will be harder to push it in, be mindful of your hands when pushing.

Step 4: Remove the Ruler

After you have successfully fully inserted the foam, it is time to take out the ruler. Start first by removing all the taping on the ruler. Then remove it by starting at one end. Pull it out slowly as not to pull out the foam as well. You can pinch on the part where the ruler is out to keep the foam in place while pulling out the ruler.

Step 5: Tadaaa, You're Done

Once the ruler is out, cut the access foam board at both ends and there you have it; your very own concert like guitar pick holder. I've kept the foam one side slightly longer than the other, to make it easier to insert the picks; simply push the longer flap with you pick behind and push it in. The foam also keeps your picks from being scratched by the hard plastic of the binder bar. The pick holder can hold up to 10 picks.

This is a cheap and simple project with a very satisfying outcome.

Step 6: Optional

If you are planning to mount this on the microphone stand boom during your next gig, my suggestion is; drill a hole at both ends of the binder bar and secure it to the boom by using cable tie straps.
